PENCIL-149L933:-
Application filed September 6, 1913.
Specification of @etters Patent.
Patented June 23, 1914..
Serial No. 788,393.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it, known that I, RICHARD H. BROWN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Sheepshead Bay, county of Kings, and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Pencil-Holder, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a pencil holder and more particularly to a novel sharpeningdevice carried thereby. This device comprises essentially a readily exchangeable sharpening blade provided with means that cause the pencil to be presented to said blade at the proper inclination for producing a neat point without entailing undue waste.
In the accompanying drawing: Figure 1 is a side view of a pencil holder embodying my invention; Fig. 2 a similar view showing the parts in a different position and with the pencil omitted; Fig. 3 a view at right angles to Fig. 2; Fig. 4 a longitudinal section on line 44, Fig. 2; Fig. 5 an enlarged cross section on line 55 Fig. 1; Fig. 6 a cross section on line 66, Fig. 4; Fig. 7 an end view of the sharpener detached, and Fig. 8 a perspective view thereof.
The tubular stem 10 of the pencil holder is provided at a distance from its forward end with a pair of diametrically opposed integral spring jaws 11, formed by means of substantially U-shaped incisions 12 made into the body of the stem. Jaws 11 are provided with inwardly directed prongs 13 made preferably of steel and adapted to bite into the body of the pencil 14. Stem 10 is encompassed by cylindrical preferably longitudinally milled slide 15 adapted to be projected over the jaws so as to cause an effective engagement between the prongs 13 and pencil 14. Means are provided for imparting to the slide during its longitudinal advance over the jaws, a limited rotating movement, said means consisting of a pin 16 that engages an inclined slot 17 of stem 10. Slide 15 in addition to its function as jaw closer, constitutes a finger piece which is grasped while writing. By the construction described, an accidental retraction of the slide and a consequent opening of the jaws is prevented for the reason that any axial backward slipping of the slide is checked during writing owing to the engagement of pin 16 with the inclined slot 17.
The rear end of stem 10 is provided with a pair of diametrically opposed openings 18, and into this end is fitted a c lindrical plug 19. having a pair of corresponding openings 20, and a head 21. Plug 19 is furnished with a slot 22 engaged by a guide pin 23 of the stem, so that when the plug is pushed into the stern, its openings will become alined with those of the stern, in which posi tion it is held by a latch 24 engaging corresponding aperture 25 of shell 10. Into plug 19 is fitted a core comprising two spaced cylindrical portions 26 which are axially slitted to accommodate a sharpening blade 27. Intermediate portions 26. blade 27 is supported at one of its sides by a web 28 connecting said portions and set back from the sharpening edge 31 of the blade, so as not to interfere with an unobstructed discharge of the pencil shavings. The length of the sharpening blade exceeds that of the core, its end projecting beyond the end of plug 19, where it is provided with an eye 29, adapted to be engaged by a suitable removing tool.
The operating edge of the blade 27 is adapted to be exposed through one set of alined openings 20, 18, so that the pencil 14 may be sharpened. by properly moving it within said slots across the blade. Blade 27 is provided with a longitudinal rib 30 that constitutes a rest or guide for the pencil to be sharpened so that the latter is presented at the proper inclination to the sharpening edge 31 (Fig. 6). A runner 32 encompassing the upper end of stem 10 is adapted to be projected over its openings 18. so as to close the same and conceal the blade. whenever the sharpening operation is finished.
I claim:
1. A pencil holder comprising a tubular stem having a lateral opening, a hollow plug removably fitted into said stem and having a lateral opening that is adapted to register with the stem-opening, a latch for holding the plug in position, a core fitted into the plug, and a sharpening blade removably engaging the core and adapted to be exposed through the openings of the stem and plug, said blade projecting axially beyond the core to be accessible for removing purposes.
2. A pencil holder comprising a tubular stem having a lateral opening, a plug removably fitted into the stem, a sharpening blade removably secured to the plug and adapted to be exposed through the stern opening. and a longitudinal guide rib on the blade, whereby the pencil to be sharpened is 10 presented to the blade at the proper inclina- Copies 01' this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents,
