EARL BORRON, OF NEW BOSTON, MISSOURI.
PENHOLDER.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EARL BonnoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Boston, in the county of Linn, State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Penholders; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in pen-holders of the class wherein provision 15 made for ejecting the pen-point without soiling the fingers of the writer, and has for one of its objects to improve the construction and increase the efficiency and utility of devices of this character.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device of this character having means for the ready removal of the parts to enable broken or impaired parts to be renewed without discarding the stock and the unimpaired parts.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction as hereinafter shown and described and then specifically pointed out in the claim; and, in the drawings illustrative of the preferred embodiment of the invention, Figure 1 is a side elevation of the improved device, Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same, Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section on the line 33 of Fig. 2, Fig. 1 is a transverse section, enlarged, on the line 1- 1 of Fig. 1, Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the main ferrule detached, Fig. 6 is a perspective view of the inner or split ferrule detached.
The improved device comprises a stock 10 preferably gradually enlarged toward the forward or pen-point receiving end and with the enlarged portion preferably triangular as shown. At its enlarged forward end the stock is provided with a longitudinal bore 11 opening through the enlarged end and with a longitudinal slot 12 communicating with the bore, the slot being preferably located in one of the triangular faces of the enlarged end. Fitting closely within the bore 11 is a main ferrule 13 and detachably secured in the bore of the stock by a suitable holding pin 14. By this means the main ferrule is supported within the stock and may be removed therefrom by Specification of Letters Patent.

detaching the pin. Formed through the main ferrule is a slot 15 which registers with the slot 12 of the stock. Slidably disposed within the main ferrule 13 is an inner ferrule 16 which is split along one side so that a resilient member is produced which by its expansion will engage the main ferrule with sn'tlicient force to prevent accidental displacement, while at the same time permitting the longitudinal movement of the split ferrule. Connected to the inner ferrule 16 is an operating pin 17 which extends through the registering slots 12-15 and extends beyond the outer face of the stock and is provided at; the outer end with an operating knob or plate 18 to enable the inner ferrule to be moved within the main ferrule by pressure applied to the head of the pin. By this means the inner ferrule may be forced outwardly beyond the outer end of the stock by moving the pin in one direction, and returned to the interior of the main ferrule by moving the pin inwardly. Formed in the side of the inner ferrule 16 opposite from the split side is an outwardly directed stop rib 19, against which the inneror butt end of the pen-point, represented at 20, bears when the latter is inserted between the outer ferrule 11 and the inner ferrule 16. The opter end of the main ferrule 11 terminates even with the outer end of the stock, and fitting over the outer end of the stock is a cap 21 having an aperture through which the outer ferrule 13 extends, the outer ferrule having a flange 22 bearing over the adjacent portion of the cap. By this means the cap effectually supports and holds the stock and prevents the latter from splitting and is in turn retained in place by the flange 22. The forward or enlarged end of the stock together with the cap 21 and outer ends of the ferrules 1.3-1(3 are beveled as shown.
WVith a device thus constructed it will be obvious that when a pen-point is broken or impaired the writer simply moves the pin 17-18 forwardly and correspondingly moves the inner ferrule 16 outwardly and causes the stop shoulders 19 to eject the penpoint. The pin 17-18 is then moved inwardly to return the inner ferrule to its former position ready to receive a new penpoint.
The improved device is simple in construction, can be inexpensively manufactured and operates effectually for the purposes described.
WVhat is claimed is A pen holder comprising a stock having a longitudinal bore through the side of the stock and a longitudinal slot communicating with said bore, a cap fitted upon the end of the stock and having an aperture registering with the bore, an outer ferrule permanently secured within the bore and having a flange upon its outer end bearing against the cap, said ferrule also having a longitudinal slot registering with the slot located in the stock, and an inner pen retaining ferrule slidably mounted within the outer ferrule in spaced relation thereto and having a pin projecting through the slots of the outer ferrule and stock, said inner ferrule also having a stop upon its outer surface movable therewith to the free end of the outer ferrule and engaging the inner surface of the outer ferrule and holding the inner ferrule in spaced relation from the said outer ferrule at one side thereof to permit the insertion of a pen point therebetween.
In testimony whereof, I afliX my signature, in presence of two Witnesses,
EARL BORRON. Vitnesses VILLIAM G. CoRAM, B. D. HosnnroN.
