(No Model.)
T. B. A. CHAMBERLAIN. COMBINED PEN HOLDER, PEN IB EXTRAGTOR, AND PAPER KNIFE.
No. 448,933. Patentd Mar. 24, 1891.
UNITED STATES PATENT FFICE.
THOMAS B. A. CHAMBERLAIN, OF TORONTO, CANADA.
COMBINED PEN-HOLDER, PEN-NIB EXTRACTOR, AND PAPER-KNIFE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 448,933, dated March 24, 1891.
Application filed October 29, 1890.- Serial No. 369,715. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, THOMAS BUOKINGHAM ANDERTON CHAMBERLAIN, gentleman, of the city of Toronto, in the county of York, in the Province of Ontario, Canada, have invented a certain new and useful Combined Pen- Holder, Pen-Nib Extractor, and Paper-Knife, of which the following is a specification.
The object of the invention is to design a penholder, the whole of which maybe utilized, the lower portion or barrel being specially adapted to eject the pen-nib, so as to obviate the necessity of using the fingers for that purpose; and it consists, essentially, of making the upper portion in the form of a blade to be used as a paper-knife and of securing within the lower portion or barrel a split supplemental inner barrel having a button secured at its upper end, which button projects through a longitudinal slot cut in the barrel, to the upper end of which slot it is forced when the pen-nib is inserted into the holder; but when it is desired to eject the nib'the button may be forced downwardly and the nib ejected, as hereinafter more particularly explained.
Figure 1 isa perspective view showing pennib in position ready for writing. Fig. 2 isa similar view showing pen-nib ejected. Fig. 3 is adetail of the supplemental barrel. Fig. l is a detail of button.
In the drawings like letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in each figure.
A is the holder, B the paper-knife blade, 0 the barrel, and D the pen-nib.
E is a supplemental inner barrel, which is split, as shown, to form a spring to hold the pen-nib securely when inserted in position.
F is the button, formed as shown or in any suitable manner. The lower end of the button F is inserted in the hole f in the inner barrel E, and held to the barrel by the projecting lugs e at the lower end of the button. The upper end of the button or button proper projects over the sides of the slot a.
When it is desired to insert the pen-nib in position, itis merely necessary to insert it in the usual way. The upper portion of the nib is pressed against the shank of the button, and thus forces it and the inner barrel to which it is connected to the upper end of the slot a. When it is desired to eject the pen-nib, the button is pushed down to the lower end of the slot and the inner barrel assumes the position shown in Fig. 2.
Although I show the slot at the upper side of the barrel of the holder it will of course be understood that it might be cut at the side or bottom and accomplish the desired result.
It will be seen from this description that the pen-nib may be ejected, even when held fast by ink or corroded, much more readily and effectively than by taking hold of the lower portion of the nib and suffering the inconvenience and annoyance of soiling the fingers.
What I claim as my invention is- 1. A pen-extractor consisting of a movable inner supplemental barrel split so as to clamp the pen between it and the main barrel, and a button attached to the same projecting through a slot in the main barrel, whereby it is moved, substantially as described.
2. The combination of the pen-nib extractor, consisting of the inner supplemental barrel, the button attached to the same, and slot made in barrel of holder, with the paper-knife blade formed at the upper end of holder, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
3. A pen-extractor consisting of a movable inner supplemental barrel, a slot in the upper face thereof adapted to receive the lower end of the button F, having lugs passing through the opening in the supplemental barrel, said button passing through a slotin the main barrel and serving as a means for o-peratin g the supplemental barrel, the said button. being detachably connected to the supplemental barrel, whereby the said barrel may be entirely removed, substantially as described.
THOS. B. A. CHAMBERLAIN.
