SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 759,293, dated May 10, 1904.
Application filed August 7, 1903- To (all w/wm it may concern.-
Be it known that I, CLIFFORD G. METIIENY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Sowego, in the county of Fauquier, State of Virginia, have invented. certain new and useful Improvements in Penholders; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. 7
This invention relates to penholders; and it has for its object to provide a device of this nature which may be operated to discharge the pen-point automatically without touching the latter with the fingers.
In the drawings forming a portion of' this specification, and in which like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several views, Figure 1 is a side elevation of the complete penholder. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the device with a pen engaged therein. Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 2, showing the clamping mechanism disengaged. Fig. 1 is a detail perspective view of a modified form of the lever. Fig. 5 is an elevation of the blank from which Fig. 4 may be formed. Fig. 6 is a section on line in m of Fig. 1.
Referring now to the drawings, and more particularly to Figs. 1, 2, and 3 thereof, the persent holder comprises the customary stem 5, having the metal socket 6 engaged upon the end thereof. The socket 6 is provided with a perforation 7 in the upper face thereof and has also two other perforations 8 and 9 at opposite points in its sides, with which are engaged the ends of a pivot-pin 10.
Disposed upon the pin 10 is a lever 11, which lies horizontally within the socket 6. The forward end 12 of the lever is extended laterally and is bowed to conform to the concavity of the inner surface of the socket and is adapted to bear thereagainst when elevated. The remaining end 13 of the lever is bent upwardly at right angles to the lever and lies within the perforation 7, against the rear edge 7 of which it impinges. ciently depressed. It will of course be understood that the metal possesses suflicient resiliency to enable the portion 13 to be sprung forward to disengage the notch 13'. The thumb-piece 1 1 is formed upon the end of the portion 13.
In operation the notch 13 is disengaged from the edge 7', and by means of the thumbpiece 14 the rearward end of the lever 11 is raised, which lowers the end 12 and permits of the insertion of a pen-point between the bowed portion thereof and the inner face of the socket 6. After the pen is engaged the spring 13 is depressed until the slot 13 is again in engagement with the edge 7, when the penpoint will be securely clamped between the end 12 and the inner face of the socket. To release a pen, i t is but necessary to again disengage the notch 13 from the edge 7, when the pen-point will drop from the socket.
In Figs. 4 and 5 of the drawings are shown a modified form of lever and the blank from which it may be formed. The blank consists of a rectangular body portion 15, having a stem 16 extending from one of the edges thereof and having a wedge-shaped perforation 16 adjacent its outer end. This stem 16 is also cut away at its end for half its width and for a distance toward the body portion 15 of substantially twice the width of the stem 16, resulting in an extension 19 upon the end of the stem. The stem 16 also has a pair of perforations 17 therethrough arranged side by side and lying substantially midway between the center of the stem and the portion 15.
In the formation of the complete lever the blank just described is doubled upon its longitudinal axis, and the sides of the portion 15 which extend beyond the stein 16 are then curved outwardly and downwardly to form a continuous convex face 18. The stem 16 is then bent longitudinally in a compound curve with its end lying in a plane above that occupied by the portion 15. The extension 19 is now bent transversely of the stem to form the thumb-piece 19. The bending of the stem results in the alinement of the perforations 17 and forms the wedge-shaped perforation 16' into a notch corresponding to the notch 13.
Other modifications of the specific construction shown may be made, and any suitable materials and proportions may be used for the various parts without departing from the spirit of the invention.
What is claimed is I l. A penholder comprising a stem having a socket in one of its ends, a lever pivoted within the socket and adapted at one of its ends to clamp a pen-point between it and the inner face of the socket and means for holding the lever at times in such clamping position.
2. A penholder comprising a stem, a cylindrical socket engaged with the end of the stem and having a perforation therethrough, a lever pivoted within the socket and having one of its ends bent upwardly and disposed within the perforation, said upwardly-directed end being provided with a notch for engagement with an edge of the perforation, the remaining end of the lever being adapted to clamp against the pen-point to hold the latter between it and the inner face of the socket when the notch is engaged with the edge of the perforation.
3. A penholder comprising a stern having a socket in one of its ends and a perforation through the wall of the socket, a lever pivoted within the socket and adapted at one of its ends to clamp a pen-point between it and the inner face of the socket, the remaining end projecting through the perforation and means for holding the lever at times in clamping relation to the socket.
