F. VAN GERPEN.
FOUNTAIN SHADING PEN.
No. 578,955. Patented Mar. 16, 1897..

I WITNESSES INVENTOI? J25; l
Mrs 'ra'rns FREDERIO VAN GERPEN, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
FOUNTAIN SHADING-PEN.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 578,955, dated March 16, 1897. Application filed July '7, 1896- Serial No. 598,328. (No model.)
To (tZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FREDERIO VAN GER- PEN, a subject of the Queen of England, and a resident of New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shading-Pens, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, formingapart thereof, in which similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts wherever found throughout the several views.
This invention relates to shading-pens; and the object thereof is to provide an improved device of this class which is simple in construction and operation and comparatively inexpensive.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specifiation, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which- Figure 1 is a central longitudinal section of my improved shading-pen and holder; Fig. 2, a plan view thereof; Fig. 3, a plan view of a strip or plate which forms a part of the construction, and Fig. 4 a section on the line 4 4 thereof.
In the practice of my invention I provide a tubular holder or reservoir 5, which is provided at one end with a removable section 6, which is connected therewith by means of a screw-thread, as shown at 7, and said removable section 6 is provided with a conicalshaped partition 8, the apeX of which is directed outwardly and provided with a small opening, as'shown at 9, and said detachable section is also provided at 10 with an air-vent, which is adapted to be closed by a projection or pin 11, formed on the arm 12 of a platelever 13, which is pivoted or fulcrumed at 14.
The end of the lever 13 between the fulcrum-point 14 and the end of the reservoir or holder 5 is enlarged or widened and segmental in cross-section, and placed thereunder is a spring 15, which serves to raise the end thereof and to depress the end of the arm 12 with which the pin or projection 11 is connected and by which the air-vent 10 is normally closed.
The end of the reservoir or holder 5 opposite the detachable end 6 is provided with a detachable tubular plug 17, having at its outer end a convex end piece 18, through which passes a metal corrugated strip or plate 19, a plan View of which is shown in Fig. 3, and said metal strip or plate is provided with longitudinal grooves 20, which terminate a short distance from the outer end, as shown at 23, and these grooves are formed or stamped in said plate or strip, and by this means both sides thereof are grooved, as shown in Fig. 4.
The pen proper consists of inclined side plates 21, which are brought together to form a point, and the outer end of the strip or plate 19 projects almost to thepoint where the side plates 21 meet.
It will be understood that a narrow passage is formed between the side plates 21 at the point 22, and said side plates are composed of spring metal, and in operation the ink is fed along the plate or strip 19 through the grooves 20, formed therein, and discharged on one of the plates 21 near the point 22, and by bearing on the point 22 one of said plates 21 may be brought in contact with the outer end of the plate or strip 19.
In operating the pen one of the fingers is pressed upon a lever 13, and this operation raises the arm 12 and allows the air to pass in through the vent or opening 10, and it will be understood that the reservoir or holder 5 may be filled with ink by detaching the end portion 6 in the usual manner.
This device is simple in construction and operation and perfectly adapted to accomplish the result for which it is intended, and it is evident that changes in and modifications of the construction herein describedmay be made without departing from the spirit of my invention or sacrificing its advantages.
Having fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. A shading-pen comprising a tubular holder or reservoir, one end of which is provided with apen which consists of two springplates which are brought together, to form a point, said end being also provided with a tubular plug, the outer end of whichis closed, and a strip or plate of metal, which passes therethrough, and which terminates near the point of the pen, said strip or plate being corrugated longitudinally so as to form longitudinal grooves, substantially as shown and described.
2. A shading-pen comprising a tubular holder or reservoir, one end of which is provided with a pen which consists of two springplates which are brought together to form a point, said end being also provided with a tubular plug, the outer end of which is closed, and a strip or plate of metal, which passes therethrough, and which terminates near the point of the pen, said strip or plate being corrugated longitudinally so as to form longitudinal grooves, and said holder or reservoir being provided at its opposite end with a de tachable section, in which is formed an airvent, and a pivoted lever which is mounted
