MICHAEL KOLB, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
CENTERING DEVICE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 539,688, dated May 21, 1895.
Application filed March 13, 1895. Serial No. 541,681. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MICHAEL KOLB, of New York city, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Centering Device, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of the invention is to provide a new and improved centering device which is comparatively simple and durable in construction, and arranged to enable the workmen to quickly and accurately punch a center in the work. v
The invention consists principally of a longitudinal bar carrying two oppositely arranged gage arms, one of which is movable and both are adapted to peripherally engage the work at opposite sides, a transverse bar carrying the centering punch, and a quadrilateral link frame pivotally connected with the said gage arms and having a sliding connection with the transverse bar.
The invention also consists of certain parts and details-and combinations of the same, as will be fully described hereinafter and then pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanyin drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a plan view of the improvement as applied. Fig. 2 is a sectional sideelevation of the same on the line 2 2 of Fig. l, and
Fig. 3 is an inverted plan view of the same.
The improved centering device is provided with a longitudinally extending slotted bar A, on one end of which is secured a gage arm B, opposite which is arranged a second gage arm B, fitted to slide on the bar A. The two gage arms B and B each has rectangular arms to engage the work 0 peripherally at opposite sides, as plainly indicated in Figs. 1 and 2. I
On the movable gage arm B is arranged a pivot D forming part of a quadrilateral frame D, having the links D and D connected with the said pivot D, and connected by the pivots D and D with the links'D and D pivoted on the pivot D held on the gage arm B and bar A. The two pivots D and D located opposite each other, are fitted to slide in slots formed in the transverse bar E crossing the bar A at right angles on the top thereof, as is plainly shown in the drawings. In the'middie of this transverse bar-E is secured the D will cause the transverse bar E to slide longitudinally on the bar A, to 'niove'the center punch correspondingly, but always in the centerof the gage arms B, B. Thus when the latter are moved in contact with the periphery of the work 0, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, then the point of the center punch F indicates the center of the work, and when struck by a hammer, forms the center of the work 0 at one end thereof.
It will be seen that by the arrangement described, the gage arms can be readily opened and closed, so as to easily apply the centering device on the work, and to form the center in the end of the work by striking the center punch as above described.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. A centering device, comprising a longii tudinal bar, two oppositely arranged gage arms, one of which is movable on the said bar and the other is fixed thereto, 'a transverse bar carrying the center punch, and a quadrilateral frame pivotally connected with the said gage arms, and having a sliding connection with the said transverse bar, substantially as shown and described.
2. A centering device, comprising a longitudinally extending slotted bar,two oppositely arranged gage arms, one of which is secured- .to the said longitudinal' bar and the other is fitted to slide thereon, a transverse slotted bar held to slide on the said vertical bar,a center punch carried by the said transverse bar and fitted to slide in the slot of the longitudinal bar, and a quadrilateral frame composed of links pivotally connected with each'other, the two opposite pivots being on the said gage arms, and the other pivots fitted .to slide in the said transverse bar, substantially as shown and described.
