Specification of Letters Patent.

Application led March 27, 1908. Serial No. 423,617.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, VILLIE T. NELSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Greenbush, in the county of Roseau, State of- Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Penholders; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appert-ains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in penholders.
The object of my invention is, to provide a penholder constructed so, that the penpoint may be instantly removed, withouttouching the point, in actuating an ejector which while positively holding the penpoint in one of its positions will when carried forward push the penpoint beyond the ferrule, so that it will become entirely disengaged.
In the accompanying drawings I have shown in Figure 1 a side view of a penholder embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view disclosing the ejector in its forward expelling position, and Fig. 3, is an end view of the pen holder, and Fig. 4, a top view of the ejector forming collar.
The aim of my invention is, to provide a penholder adapted to firmly and positively hold a penpoint, and be so constructed that the point may be instantly ejected when it is desired to replace the same with a new point.
An operative embodiment of my invention includes a penstaff 5 of conventional conformation, and a tubular or cylindrical ferrule 7 having its end beveled to provide an upper projecting portion, the ferrule being provided with the longitudinal slot 9, within the bottom or lower portion of the ferrule as shown in Fig. 2 and intermediate of its ends.
Slidably held within this cylindrical ferrule is an ejector in the form of a member comprising the tubular portion 12 of a length slightly less than said ferrule which has its upper forward end slotted as shown at 11 for a distance approximately half the length of the ejector which is then transversely incised as is shown at 10. By means of the slot 11 and the transverse incision l() two penpoint supporting wings 18 are formed upon which the pen point is held and which are curved inward in a radius having a diameter less than the collar portion 12, so that the forward edge 15 of the tubular portion 12 forms a stop shoulder adjacent said wings against which the rear end of the penpoint is stopped as disclosed in Fig. 2. The tubular portion 12 is slidably held within the ferrule and at a suitable point is provided with the projecting operating pin 16 extending through the slot 9. The penpoint A is held upon the wings 18 and below the ferrule 7 with its shank against the stop shoulder 15. In this condition the penpoint is securely held within the holder but in order to remove the same it is simply necessary to advance the ejector which results in the point being carried forward until it becomes entirely disengaged so that a new point may be readily inserted after the ejector has been carried into .its rearward position.
The operating pin 16 is projected far enough so that it forms a stop to the penholder preventing the same from rolling down an inclined desk surface or rolling sidewise. This construction in no way detracts from the sightly construction of the pen.-
Vhile I have described the pin 16, as be ing secured to the collar 12, the same may be made of an integral portion of the collar.
And having thus described my said invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by U. S. Letters Patent is- The combination, with a pen staff, of a cylindrical ferrule having its forward end beveled to provide an upper projecting portion, the lower portion of the ferrule having a longitudinally disposed slot intermediate of its ends, a cylindrical ejector slidably held within said cylindrical ferrule of a length slightly less than said ferrule and having its end beveled to register with said beveled ferrule end, said ejector having its upper forward end slotted for a distance approximately half its length, said slot ending in a transverse incision, the ejector adjacent said slot being formed into two pen point supporting wings, which are curved inwardly, the remainder of the ejector be- In testimony whereof, I aiiix my signature,
