IcAN BOARD-AND BOX co,
PAPER LUNCH-BOX.
Specification of Letters Patent.
I Patented Oct. 26, 1909.
To all whom it may concern:-
Be it known that I, HARVEY-J. ZELL, a
citizen of the United States, residing at Dayton, 1n the county of Montgomery and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Paper Lunch-Boxes; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to-which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanyand to the figures of reference specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in collapsible paper boxes,
especially adapted for lunches.
The object of the invention is to provide ,a paper lunch box which is foldable to lie flat and to thus occupy but little space in shipment. In other words, the boxes are folded before shipment, and in such folded condition are laid flat one upon the other to occupy a minimum space in shipment. When in the hands of the seller or user, the boxes are readily opened out from their shipping position and ready for the contents to bev laced therein. I
In t e accompanying drawings, Fi re 1, is a plan view of the blank from WhlCll the box is formed. Fig. 2, is a view of the box after being formed from the blank and in a flattened or collapsed condition for shipment. Fig. 3, is a perspective view of the box opened from the collapsedcondition shown in Fig. 2. Fig. 4, is a front elevation of the box showing the same partially folded.
The completed box as shown in Fig. 3 is formed from the blank shown in .Fig. 1, and consists of a bottom 1,-front and rear sides 3and 3 separated from the bottom by intervening parallel score lines. The ends 2 2 are separated from the bottom by intervening scorelines, and the said ends 2 2 lie on the inner sides of triangular folds consisting of end extensions 4, 5, 6 and 7 which are separated from the front and rear sides 3 and 3 by intervening score lines, and fold upon diagonal score lines. The front and fastening devices 15, see Fig. 3. When the end walls of the box consistlng of the folds 4, 5, 6 and 7 and the ends 2, are foldedflat as in Fig.2, the said ends fold inwardly upon the score lines which separate the ends2 2 from the-bottom 1, and lie flat by breaking upon the diagonal score lines 18 and 18'. The cover 9 is separated from the rear side 3' by a score line, and said coverisalso provided with dia onal score lines 16 16 which intersect wit the score lines 18 of the rear side 3. The score lines 16 of said cover are utilized when folding the boxfor shipment as in F ig. 2 in which condition, the portions 10 10 he against the portions 8'. The diagonal score lines .16 extend beyond the score lines 17 which separate the ends 11 11 of the cover, and by so extending said score lines 16 16, the cover 9 is permitted to lie flat as in Fig. 2; The ends l1 11 of the cover bend upon the score lines- 17 and lie on the inner sides of the ends of the box when the cover is closed down upon the box. The extension 12 also folds downwardly on the score line intervenin it and -the cover 9, and 'lies on the inner si e of the front wall 3 of the box when said cover is closed. Y
It will be understood that the score lines 18, 18 and 16 are utilized only to collapse the box for shipment as in Fig. 2. When the box is folded as in Fi 3, the score lines referred to are IlOt'lltlllZGCl, and the folded box is prevented from breaking on such score lines by the cover being inserted in the mouth of the vessel, that isthe tonguesll 11 and 12 engaging the inner sides of the ends and front of the box.
A flexible handle 14 is united to the ends of the box and serves to carry the box by. .When the box is in the collapsed form shown in Fig. 2, the flexible handle 14 yields readily to the folded position of the box.
When it is desired to collapse the box, the various portions are moved as indicated by the arrows in Fig. 3; The front and'rear upon the other and both upon the-rear side 3' with the 'cover 9 lying fiat upon said folded portions 8 and 10, andlikewise the folds Slie flat against the front side 3 of thebox with the ends consistin of the portions 2 2'and the triangular lds 4, 5,- 6
the portions 8 and 8'.
folded and united to the end walls 2 by the I sides flatten outwardly in a plane with the bottom 1; the portions 8 and 10 he one and 7 lying inwardly against the bottom of the box.
Having described my invention, I claim: I 1. A collapsible box havin a bottom and front and rear sides, said font and rear sides having diagonal score lines which permit the ends of the box to lie flat against the bottom of said box, and a cover joinin the rear side of the box and having dlagona score lines which permitsaid cover to lie against the ends and rear side of the box when the box is collapsed.
2. A paper box comprisihg a bottom and front and rear sides, the bottom having end extensions and the front and rear sides havm onal score lines against the end extensions of the box; the front and rear sides of the box having diagonal score lines, and cover joining the rear side of the box pro end extensions which fold upon diagvided with diagonal score lines which intersect with the dlagonal score lines on the rear side of the box.
3. A paper box comprising a bottom and front and rear sldes with end extensions forming the end closures of the box, a cover joining the rear side of the box and having marginal folds which lie on the inside of the ends and front side of the box when said cover is made to close the box, the front side, rear side and cover of said box having diagonal score lines which'enable said box to be folded in a flat condition for shipment.
In testiinon whereof I affix my signature,
in pre'sence 0 two witnesses.
