UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FRANK KNOIIELOCII, OF DAYTON, OIIIO, ASSIGNOR TO THE CARTER-CRUME COMPANY, OF NIAGARA FALLS, NEIV YORK.
PAPER BOX.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 546,767, dated September 24, 1895.
Application filed January 11,1895. Serial No. 534,588. (No model.)
To all whomit may concern.-
lie it known that I, FRANK KNonELoorI, a citizen of the United States, residing at Dayton, in the county of Montgomery and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Paper Boxes, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
My invention relates to collapsible paper boxes which may be packed and shipped fiattened out in a collapsed condition and are intended to be folded into box shape by the user.
It consists of certain novel construction and I arrangement of parts, to be hereinafter more particularly pointed out and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a plan view of the blank from which the box is formed. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the box in process of folding. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the body of the box complete.
The box-blank is cut from a suitable sheet of cardboard or other material in the shape shown in Fig. 1, the heavy lines showing the cut portions of the blank and the dotted lines the lines of folding.
A is the bottom, 13 B the sides, and C O the ends. Between the sides and ends are the side and end folds a b. Strips c c are left attached to the sides, and these strips have side wings d (l. The end pieces are provided with flaps D D, having formed at the outer ends the double tongues ff.
To form. the box the sides and ends are bent up at right angles to the bottom, and the side and end folds a b are folded together on the line e, so that the fold-line e is inside. The on ter ends of'these folds are thus brought together and overlap each other to a small extent, and the slits g g in the side folds a a are broughtinnermost. The side pieces a c are folded over on the sides B l}, and the side wings (I (Z are folded in at right angles to the sides, and the end flaps D D brought down over the corner folds, and these side wings and the tongues ff are inserted in the slits g g, thus locking in upright position the sides and ends. A score-line or crease h is made in each end flap D D, about midway thereof, to facilitate the locking of the flaps. It will be noticed that the upper edge of this box is reinforced both at sides and ends by the strips 0 c and the side wings (Z (Z, while the corner folds add largely to the strength and durability of the box. The lid for this form of box I have not shown, as any of the well-known forms of collapsible lids or covers may be used, or both the body and the cover of the box may be made in the same way and one telescoped into the other.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patcut, is-- In a paper boxthe combination with the bottom, sides, and ends, of side and end folds between the sides and ends, with'slits in the side folds, and side pieces attached to the sides, with side wings thereon for reinforcing the sides and ends, end flaps to be folded over the corner folds, and side wings with double tongue thereon to be inserted in the slits in the side folds, said end flaps having a crease about mid-way thereof to facilitate the locking'of same, substantially as shown and described.
FRANK KNOBELOOII.
