UNI-TED STATES CHARLES F. ROM, OF CINCINNATI, OI-IIO.
TRUNK-TRAY SUPPORT.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES F. ROM, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cincinnati, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Trunk-Tray Supports, of which the following is a specification.
It is the object of my invention to provide a new and useful trunk-tray support so constructed that the same will automatically spring into action for supporting the trunktray when the tray is raised, and so arranged as to prevent the unintentional release or accidental closing of the tray, and the invention consists in the novel construct-ion and arrangement of the parts.
The invention will be readily understood from the following description and claims, and from the drawing, in which latter:
Figure 1 represents a rear perspective view of so much of a trunk and its tray asis necessary to illustrate my invention, the same being partly broken away, with the tray in closed position. Fig. 2 is a similar View illustrating my improved device with the tray in raised position. Fig. 3 is a horizont-al section on the line m of Fig. 1, showin'g the body and tray of a trunk partly broken away, with my improved device in position, and the tray in closed relatio-n. Fig. l is a vertical section on a line corresponding to the line z-a of Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is a vertical section on a line corresponding to the line y--y of Fig. 3; and Fig. 6 is a rear perspective view of my improved device, shown attached to a tray which is broken away. Y
1 represents the body of the trunk and 2 represents the tray which is pivoted to the body by means of hinges, one of which is shown at 3. These hinges may be releasable hinges so that the tray may be removed from the trunk if desired.
4 is an anchor-plate which issecured to the corner of the tray and preferably comprises a rubbing-plate 5 from which a flange 6 eX- tends at substantial right angles, forming a corner 7 which is coincident in position with the corner 8 of the tray. The anchor-plate is secured to the tray in suitable manner, as by means of cleats 9 passing through the anchor-plate into the tray.
The anchor-plate is provided with a raised boss 10 struck up from the metal of which the anchor-plate is composed and forming a channel 11 in which the head 12 of a rivet Specification of Letters Patent.

13 slides, there being a slot l14 in said raised boss through which the shank of the rivet passes.
16 is a leaf-spring support comprising a securing portion 17, which is secured to the side of the tray, as by means of cleats 18, an outwardly bent portion 19, and an inwardly extending lip 20, the latter riding upon the rubbing-plate portion of the anchor-plate el'. The edges of the movable portions of the leaf-spring support are bent inwardly as shown at 21 for presenting the edges of the support toward the tray and removing said edgesl from contact with the body of the trunk, especially from contact with the lining 22 of the same. spring support is preferably bent up from a piece of sheet metal, the inward bends of the edges of the same .increasingin size toward the inwardly extending lip, these inward bends also being formed upon said inwardly extending lip and being also provided at the corner 2i of the leaf-spring support which is adjacent in position to the corner 7 of the anchor-plate when said support is in closed relation. The rivet 13 is secured to said inwardly extending lip and passes through the slot 14C, thereby forming limiting means between said leaf-spring support and anchor-plate.
When the tray is brought into raised position the outer end of the leaf-spring support will automatically spring outwardly as soon as the tray has been swung upwardly on its hinges suficiently to raise the leafspring support above the upper edge of the side 25 of the body of the trunk, thereby bringing said leaf-spring support into vertical alinement with said side and preventing the tray from dropping back tolowered position until the movable part of the said The leafleaf-spring support has been again pushed A inwardly out of vertical range with said side, the inwardly bent edges of the movable portion of said leaf-spring support preventing injury to the lining of said body, and the construction and arrangement insuring ease of movement, reliability in the performance of the functions of the device, and a strong support for the tray.
My improved device also prevents accidental dropping of the cover 26 of the trunk, when the tray is in raised position, the cover being pivoted on hinges 27.
My improved construction forms a strong support for the tray when the latter is raised, and also forms a spring-structure of great resilience so that the support will snap into place immediately upon the raising of the tray and prevent unintentional falling of the saine, while at the same time it presents rounded edges to the body ofthe trunk for preventing injury to the lining thereof.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I cla-im as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
l. In a trunk-tray support, the combination with the body of a trunk, a tray therefor, and means for pivotally supporting said tray upon said body, of an anchor-plate secured at the corner at said tray, said aiichor-plate having a raised boss struck up therefrom for forminga channel under said'y anchor-plate,'there being a slot in said raised boss, a leaf-spring secured to the side of said `tray at a point-distanced from said corner thereof and having an inwardly extending lip, a rivet secured to said inwardly eX- tending lip, the head whereof has movement .-in said channel of said anchor-plate,
' the sides of said leaf-spring being curled for presenting the edge-faces thereof toward said tray and `presenting rounded faces toward 'the body of said trunk, substantially as described.
2. In a trunk-tray support, the combination `with the body of a trunk anda tray pivoted therein, of an anchor-plate comprising a plate and a iiange struck up at right angles therefrom for forming a corner which mates the corner of said tray, said plate having a-raisedfboss struck up therefrom which is provided with a slot and which forms a channel thereunder between said anchorplate and said tray, a leaf-spring support secured to the side of said tray at a pointdistanced from the corner thereof and provided with an inwardly extending lip lwhich Vtray is in lowered position, said leaf-spring support'being arranged for having itscorner automatically lspring outwardly away lfrom said tray when said ytray is Iin 4raised position for forming a support for said tray, and the walls of said-slot and saidconnection for -said inwardly extending lip forming limiting means for said movement of said corner of said leaf-spring support, substantially yas described.
In testimony whereof, I have signed my name hereto in the presence'oftwo.subscribing witnesses. Y Y
