JAMES CAS PARRISH, `OF
PETERSBURG, vVIRGINIA.
Letters Patent No. 114,335, dated May 2, 1871.
IMPROVEMENT IN COAL-SCUTTLES.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the lame.
Beit known that I, J AMES Ons PARnIsH, of Petersginia, have invented a new and improved Ooai-Souttle; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing making a part of this specfication, in which- Figure l is a sectional elevation, and
Figure 2 is a partial perspective.
The invention relates to that class of coal-scuttles that is provided with a sii'ter, situated above and parallel with the bottom; and
The invention consists in the provision, in connection with the ash-chamber oi' the seuttle, of a door, which is provided with a bail and hinged dooror @over to operate in a peculiar manner, as hereinafter described.
In the drawinga indicates the body b, the diaphragm;
h, the hood; and
f, the hinged lid orcover of a seuttle, to which my improvement is shown applied.
It will be observed that the diaphragm is provided with a number of perforations, e, iu its rear half, but is imperforate at its front part,
The part 'i prevents the coal-dust or ashes accumulated in the ash-pit from passing into and mingling with the coal when it is being poured out Yof the scuttle.
My improvement is shown applied' in the rear of the scuttie and beneath thediaphragm. It consists of a hinged door, d, for removing refuse from the ashpit, whioh dooris provided with a handle, e, that not only serves for opening the door, but is also very convenient for laying hold of when handling the seuttle.
When ashes or refuse coal is to be discharged from the seuttle the door l is turned under the bottom; but when closed the same lits sufciently close to prevent the escape ofsueh material..
Having thus described my invention,
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The ash-pit door (l and scnttle-handle e combined,
as set forth.
