Description

H. L. ARNOLD. Goal-Scuttle No. 214,077. Patented April 8, I879.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY L. ARNOLD, OF LEADVILLE, COLORADO.
IMPROVEMENT IN COAL-SCUTTLES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 214,077, dated April 8, 1879; application filed December 17, 1878.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY L. ARNOLD, of Leadville, Lake county, State of Colorado, have invented anew and useful Improvement in Goal-Scuttles; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and clear description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.
The object of my invention is to construct a coal-scuttle which is provided with a pivoted lid for closing the opening through which the scuttle is filled with coal, so that no dust may arise and no particles of coal fall out when the scuttle is used for filling stoves, 8w.
My invention consists in hinging the movable lid of a coal-scuttle to an axle attached to the coal-scuttle proper, in such a manner that the said lid, when thrown back to admit of filling of the scuttle, will pass under the upper part of the scuttle without interfering with the handle of the same.
In order to describe my invention more fully, I refer to-the accompanying drawings.
Figure 1 is a side view of my improved scuttle. Fig. 2 is a sectional view. Fig. 3 is a plan view. Fig. 4 is a transverse sectional view of the same.
A is the scuttle, with opening I) in front, and opening 0 at the rear. The scuttle is filled through opening 0 and emptied through opening b. e is a handle. Over the opening a is pivoted, on axle or rod f, or its equivalent, the movable lid G, which is provided with the small handle g.
The object of hinging the movable lid on the rod f, as shown, is to permit the movable lid, when thrown back, to pass inside the scuttle proper, as shown in the dotted lines, Fig. 2.
I am aware that a patent has been granted to Ellithorp and Sloane, No. 90,437, dated May 25, 1869, for coal-scuttles with a hinged cover.
I am also aware that a patent has been granted to James H. Preater, No. 185,258, December 12, 1876, for spice-chests with segmental covers, and I therefore do not wish to be understood as broadly claiming a movable lid or segmental cover; but
What I do desire to claim is The movable lid G, with handle g, in combination with the axle f and. the scuttle A, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
HENRY L. ARNOLD.
