APPLICATION FILED DBO.10,1908.

WILLIAM L. KUNKEL, OF GREEN ISLAND, IOWA.
REIN AND HITCHING-STRAI HOLDER.
Specication of Letters Patent.
Patented Get. 5, 19MB.
Application filed December 10, 1908. Serial No. 466,841.
To all whom fit may concern:
Be it known that I, VJiLLiAM L. KUNKEL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Green Island, in the county of Jackson and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rein and Hitching- Strap Holders, of which the following is a specification.
This invention comprehends certain new and useful improvements in attachments for harness for use in holding the reins, or a hitching strap, and the invention has for its object, a simple, durable and eflicient construction of device of this character which may be easily manipulated and easily se-l cured to the terret or guide ring of the harness saddle so that the hitching strap or lines may be quickly and securely held between the attachment and the ring, and as easily removed from engagement between the attachment and ring whenever desired.
Vith these and other objects in view, as will more fully appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists in certain constructions, arrangements and combinations of the parts that I shall hereinafter fully describe and claim.
For a full understanding of the invention, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawings in which:
Figure l is a view showing the invention applied to the terret of a harness saddle; Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section through the saddle disclosing the device applied thereto. Fig. 3 is an end view of the terret having the improvement applied thereto showing a transverse section of the harness saddle. Fig. 4f is a bottom plan View of the spring clip.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the accompanying drawings by the same reference characters.
Referring to the drawing, the numeral l designates a harness saddle, and 2 the terrets or guide rings thereof, the same being provided with the usual Shanks 3 and heads 4.
My improved rein and hitching strap holder comprises a spring clip A formed of strong metal, or other material, as desired, and having one end returned upon itself, as
indicated at 5, the said returned end being formed with a recess or fork 6. The main portion of the clip A is curved to correspond substantially to the curvature of the terret or guide ring, the upper extremity being outwardly or reversely curved as shown, the said main portion is also formed with a longitudinally extending slot 7, somewhat longer than the diameter of the terret so that the clip may be slipped over the terret, the fork 6 of the lower end straddling and engaging the shank 3, and the side members 8 that define the slot 7 extending on opposite sides of the terret as clearly illustrated in the drawing. The base or lower end wall of the slot 7 preferably engages the neck 9 of the terret above the head 4.
From the foregoing description in connection with the accompanying drawings, it will be seen that I have provided a very simple, durable and efficient construction and arrangement of rein and hitching strap holder which may be easily secured to the shank of the terret as before described and which, when in position, may be used as a very convenient and ready means for holding a hitching strap or the lines while the same are not being used. The returned lower end of the strip of metal or other material forming the clip together with the lower end wall of the slot 7 form secure means for engaging the shank of the terret both above and below the head thereof so as to hold the clip properly in place at all times.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
l. As an article of manufacture, a rein and hitching strap holder, comprising a metal strip bent into arcuate formation, the outer end of said strip being curved outwardly, said strip having a slot longitudinally disposed in the same and a returned end said returned end being forked to engage about the shank of a harness terret.
2. As a new article of manufacture, a rein and hitching strap holder comprising a spring clip formed with a longitudinally extending slot, and with a returned end, said end being forked for the reception of a terret shank therethrough specifically as described.
3. IIhe combination with a harness saddle and a terret thereof, said terret being formed with an attaching shank, of a rein and hitching strap holder comprising a longitudinally In testimony whereof I aliX my signature slotted spring clip adapted to be slipped in presence of tWo Witnesses.
over the terret the said Clip beinO formed f with a returned end, the said eid being VILLIM L' KUNIXEL' [L' S'] formed with a fork, and the said fork and l/Vitnesses:
