Be itknown that I, LEANDER L. BARTLETT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Montague City, in the county of Franklin and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Reel-Seats for Fishing-Rods; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to improvements in fishing-rods; and it consists in the construction, combination, and arrangement of devices hereinafter described and claimed.

The object of my invention is to provide an improved form of fishing-rod having a reelseat which forms a lateral offset from the rod to which it is attached and which serves for the reception of the reel-step to bring the axis of the reel substantially in the plane of the axis of the rod, thereby reducing the friction of the line on the first guide of the rod and also obviating the tendency of the rod to turn in the hand.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is an elevation of a portion ofafishing-rod provided with a reel-seat embodying my invention and showing the reel having the step thereof secured to the reel-seat. Fig. 2 is a detail longitudinal sectional view of the same. Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view of the same, taken on the plane indicated by the line a (0 of Fig. 2.

In the embodiment of my invention I provide a fishing-rod, which may be of any suitable form and construction, with a reel-seat, which is an offset that projects from one side of the rod and is adapted for the reception of the step of a reel.

The reel-seat 1 here shown has members 2 3, for the attachment of the butt of the rod 4: and the handle 5, respectively, arms 6 7, which project laterally from said members, respectively, and a neck 8, which connects the outer ends of the said arms together and in connection with the said arms forms a lateral ofiset of the rod, which projects from one side thereof. construction and may be made of any suitable material.

The attaching member 2 is here shown as provided with a socket 9 for the reception of the butt of the rod, and the attaching memher 3 is here shown as provided with an outwardly-extending rod 10, which forms the core for the handle 5, that may be made of cork. The inner side of the neck is rounded, as at 11, to adapt it to the shape of the concave outer side of the step of the reel. The outer side of the neck is flattened, as at 12, and has a longitudinal centrally-disposed strengthening-flange 13, that extends from end to end of the neck and projects outwardly therefrom.

The arm 7 is here shown as provided on its inner side at its junction with the neck with a recess 14, adapted to receive and seat one end of the reel-step b. On the inner side of the neck, near the opposite end thereof, is a projecting stop or stud 16, adapted to bear against the opposite end of the reel-step to prevent the casual disengagement of the latter from the seat-recess 14. A yoke 17 is slidable on the neck. Its arms 18 engage the outer side of the neck, and its intermediate portion is arched and adapted to engage the outer end of the reel-step, said yoke coacting with the recess-seat and stop-stud to detachably secure the reel to the seat.

l/Vithin the scope of my invention any suitable means may be employed to secure the reel to the seat, and I wish it to be understood that I do not limit myself in this particular.

It will be observed that the offset to the rod formed by the reel-seat is of such extent as to dispose the axis of the reel-spool d substantially in the-plane of the aXis of the rod. This lessens the angle of the line with reference to the rod as the line is paid out by the reel, and hence reduces the friction of the line on the first guide a of the rod. The offset formed by the reel-seat by centering the reel-spool with referenceto the rod also obviates the tendency of the rod to turn in the hand. Furthermore, the offset reel-seat disposes the step of the reel below the rod, thereby bringing the reel into a position where it is handy to the thumb, which has to be constantly used in bait-casting. It also enables the forefinger to bear tightly against the base of the reel-seat, thereby affording an exceedingly strong grip for the hand.

I do not desire to limit myself to the construction and combination of devices herein shown and described, as it is obvious that modifications may be made therein without departing from the spirit of my invention and within the scope of the appended claims.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- l. A fishing-rod having an offset projecting from one side thereof said otlset comprising end members which project directly from one side oi the rod, and a neck portion which connects the said end members and serves for the reception of a reel-step.

2. In combination with a fishing-rod having an offset projecting from one side thereof said otlset comprising end members and a neck portion connecting them, a reel having its step secured to the inner side of the neck portion, for the purpose set forth.

3. A reel-seat comprising attaching devices for members of a rod, arms projecting "from one side of the attaching devices, and a neck, connecting the arms, substantially as described.

4. A reel-seat comprising end members for attachment to members of a rod, and a neck connecting said end members and forming an offset from the rod, substantially as described.
