FISHING-ROD.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Jiatent No. 790,419, dated May 23, 1905.
Application filed October 10, 1904. Serial No.'227,918.
To aZZ whom it may concern.- 7
Be itknown that I, LEANDER L. BARTLETT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Montague City, in the county of Franklin and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fishing-Rods; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in fishing-rods; and it consists in the construction, combination, and arrangement of devices hereinafter described and claimed.
The object of my invention is to provide an improved form of fishing-rod having an 01fset projecting from one side thereof, said offset having a reel-seat for the reception of a reel-step and being further provided with a finger-hold.
A further object of my invention is to provide an improved'form of fishing-rod having an offset projecting from one side thereof for the reception of the step of a reel, a reel-locking member slidable on the offset, and means to operate the said locking member.-
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is an elevation of a portion of a fishing-rod provided with a reel-seat embodying my invention and showing a reel having the step thereof secured to the reel-seat, portions of the ofiset of the rod being shown in section. Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view taken on the plane indicated by the line a a of Fig. 1.
In the embodiment of my invention I provide a fishing-rod, which may be of any suitable form and construction, with a reel-seat which has an offset that projects from one side of the rod and is adapted for the reception of the step of a reel. The reel-seat 1 here shown has members 2 3 for the attachment of the butt of the rod 4 and the handle 5, respectively, arms 6 7 which project laterally from said members, respectively, and a neck 8, which connects theouter ends of the said arms together and in connection with the said arms forms the lateral offset of the rod which projects from one side thereof. The reel-seat may be of any suitable form and in my said application for patent, I provide the offset with a hold 9 for the reception of the forefinger, thereby greatly facilitating the grasp and handling of the rod. As here shown the said finger-hold is on the under side of the neck portion of the oflset at the outer side thereof nearest the handle 5. The oflTset portion of the rod is here shown as made of metal, and the neck thereof has its outer side flattened, as at 10, its inner side rounded, as at 11, and is provided on its outer side with a longitudinally-disposed centrally located strengthening web or flange 12. The arm 7 is shown as provided with a recess 13 for the reception of one end of the step 14 of the reel 15.
I also provide a movable reel-locking member, which is here shown as a yoke 16, which is slidable on the neck portion of the offset and which is adapted to be moved into and out of engagement with one end of the reel-step to coact with the recess in the arm 7 in locking the reel-step to the neck portion of the olfset. The said locking-yoke has a stud 17, which is provided with a transverse screw-threaded opening engaged by an operating-screw 18, which is swiveled tothe arm 6, as at 19, and is provided at its front or outer end with an enlarged head 20, having a milled edge to enable it to be readily turned. It will be understood that by means of this screw the yoke may be readily moved into or out of locking position, and hence the reel may be readily attached to and detached from the offset portion of the rod.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and operation of the inveninvention.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A fishing-rod having an offset projecting from one side thereof for the reception of the step of the reel, a movable reel-locking member, and means to operate said reel-locking member.
2. A fishing-rod havingan ofi'set projecting from one side thereof for the reception of the step of a reel, a reel-locking member slidable on said offset, and a screw to operate the said reel-locking member.
3. A fishing-rod having an offset projecting from one side thereof, said offset comprising end members which project from one side of the rod, and a neck portion which connects the said end members and serves for the reception of a reel-step, and further provided with a reel-locking member movable on the neck portion, and means to move the reellocking member into and out of locking position.
4. A fishing-rod having an offset projecting from one side thereof, said offset having a reel-seat for the reception of a reel-step and being further provided with a finger-hold.
5. A fishing-rod having an offset projecting from one side thereof, said offset comprising end members which project from one side of the rod and a neck portion which connects the said end members and serves for the reception of a reel-step, said offset being provided on its outer side with a finger-hold for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
