PATENT OFFICE.
FISHING-GAFF.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 763,726, dated June 28, 1904.
Application filed September 26, 1903. Serial No. 174,726. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MENZO F. 000K, a citizen of the United States, residing at Flint, county of Genesee, State of Michigan, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Fishing-Gaffe; and I declare the following to beafull, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to gaff-hooks, and has for its object an improved hook adapted to be used by fishermen for catching and landing fish in place of the usual landing-net.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a section of the hook and a portion of the handle. Fig. 2 is a section of the ferrule connection between the handle and the hook.
The ferrule is made in two parts 1 and 2, and of these the part 1 is secured to a wooden haft or handle. The part 2 is secured to the hook. The two parts are separably connected by a screw 3. The screw 3 is made by threadinga rod from end to end. A portion of the threaded rod is inserted in a tube 4: and secured either by soldering it or by screwing and soldering it. The abutting end 5 of the zone of the ferrule which surrounds the screw is slightly rimmed out. The terminal 2, which holds the hook, is drawn, turned, bored, or swaged and is provided with a screw-threaded socket 6. The zone 7, which surrounds the mouth of the socket, is slightly rimmed out. The hook 8 is made from a good quality of steel, is provided with an upset head9,-Which fits in a countersunk seat in the terminal 2,
from the handle and stored in any suitable and secure place where it will not be liable to injure the user and from which it may be quickly taken and mounted for use. The separable hookcan be made very sharp and kept very sharp.
What I claim is 1. In a fishing-gaff, in combination with a ferrule provided with a screw-coupling, a hook-bearing terminal, a countersunk seat in the terminal, a hook provided with a head engaging said seat and secured in place by soldering or brazing in addition to the security afforded by the head, substantially as described.
2. In a fishing-gaff, in combination with a ferrule, a coupling-plug inside the ferrule, a screw-coupling secured in the plug, a separable terminal provided with a screw-socket and with a hook having a headed part within the terminal and a pointed hook part projecting therefrom, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I sign this specification in the presence of two witnesses.
