G. SVLEET.
GUN WIPER N0..288,459.. v I Patented Nov. 13, 1883.
227 9 P 5 imam Fi i UNITED. STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES S. LEET, OF BRIDGEPORTROONNEOTICUT.
GUN-WIIPER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 288,459, dated November 13, 1883.
Application filed May 8, 1863. (No model.)
I To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, CHARLES S. LEET, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bridgeport, in the county of Fairfield and State of Connecticut, have invented new and useful Improvements in Cleaning-Rods, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in cleaning-rods for guns, the object being to provide improved joint-connections for wooden cleaning-rods, wherebythe metallic connecting devices thereof are entirely hidden beneath the surface of the rod, so that they cannot be made to hit the muzzle and interior of the gun-barrel and injure the latter when the rod is used to wipe it out.
In the drawings forming part of this specification, Figures 1, 2, and 3 are side elevations of the top, middle, and bottom sections of a cleaning-rod embodying my invention. Fig. 4 is aview, partly in section, of the screw end of a section of the rod; and Fig. 5 is a like view of the nut end of a section.
In the drawings, a, b, and 0 are the several sections of a jointed wiping or cleaning rod, usually made of suitable wood or other nonmetallic material, and provided with screwconnections for uniting the sections to form a rod of suitable length to reach through a gunbarrel.
As ordinarily made, the rod-sections have their joint connections secured thereto by means of metallic pins, ferrules, or sockets, or other devices, which form a part of the surface of the rod, andwhen the rod is used in a highly-polished gun-barrel, and said metallic parts are moved back and forth against the interior of said. barrel, the latter is often scratched and injured thereby.
To obviate the above-named inconveniences I construct my improved rod as follows: Each of the sections a b c is provided with screw- I connections, as shown, male and female. The male connection consists of a screw, 6, having a shank extending into one end of one of said sections, or both, its screwed end projecting from the end of the latter. Said screw 6 is secured to the end of the section by a transverse pin, 22, passing through the rod-section and through the shank of said screw. The ends of said pint are preferably sunk below the surface of the rod, as shown. The female screw connection for said sections consists of a nut, a, inserted into the end of the section, adapted to receive the screw 0, and secured in the section by a pin, 1), passing through the latter and said nut in substantially the same manner in which said pin 2; passes through the end of a section and the shank of screwe. The sections of the rod are united by screwing them together, and thus the ends thereof are brought firmly against each other, and the surface of the rod from end to end is entirely free from any metal parts which can injure a gun-barrel.
What I claim as my invention is The combination, with the sections of a jointed non-metallic cleaning-rod, of metallic male and female screw connections, substantially as described, secured in said sections beneath the surface thereof.
EARL-A. RIsHoR, WILLIAM H. NORTHALL.
