Description
G. SMITH.
' STOCKS FOR FIRE-ARMS.
Patented June 20, 1876.
' .Inrenior:
GEORGE SMITH, OF SOUTH BEND, INDIANA.
IMPROVEMENT IN STQCKS FOR FIRE'ARMS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 79,075, dated June 20, 1876; application filed April 4, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known thatI, GEORGE SMITH, of South Bend, in the county of St. Joseph and State of Indiana, have. invented a new and useful Improvement in Gun and Pistol Stocks; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawingsyand to the letters of reference marked thereon.
My invention relates to a butt or shoulder piece for fire-arms, the object being to have the butt-piece so adjustable as to be capable of being adapted to the sights of different persons using the fire-arm, and so that the number of di'flerent sizes and shapes of stocks now made may be greatly diminished.
My invention therein consists, principally, in a butt or shoulder piece for lire-arms, adapted to be adjusted vertically; and, further, in the means for rendering the same adjustable, all as more fully hereinafter explained.
To enable others skilled in the art to manufacture my device, I now describe the same in connection with drawings, in Which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of a pistol-grip gun stock having the adjustable butt-piece attached thereto. Fig. 2 is a central longitudinal section of the joint connecting the buttpiece and grip. Fig. 3 is a detached view of the slotted plate attached to the butt-piece; Fig. 4, a detached view of the plate secured to the grip 3 Fig. 5, a view of the sliding block.
Like letters denote corresponding parts in each figure.
A represents the butt-piece, and B the pistol-grip stock of the shot-gun, preferably of about the form shown. To the inner end of the butt-piece is secured by screws a metallic plate, 0, which is formed to fit closely the shape of the grip. This plate is provided with a rectangular slot, to. -A rectangular block, 1), slides freely in the slot at, fitting closely the sides of the same. The block b has an e11- larged head, D which slides in an enlarged slotcin the stock, the body I; of the block projecting partially through the slotted plate. This block is provided with a screw-threaded hole, b through its center. From the plate at one end of the slot projects a short stud, d. Dis a convex metallic plate set into the back of the grip flush with the surface, and secured by screws. This plate has a central square hole, 6, passing through it, adapted to fit over the end of the block Z). A long screw, E, passes through the grip, and into the hole in the sliding block, and by turning the same the butt-piece and grip are forced together. This plate D is provided with a number of small sockets,f, punched in the same, which engage with the stud d on the plate 0.
The advantages of my device he principally in its use on shot-guns for sporting purposes, where it is necessary that the butt-piece should be in such a position relative to the barrels of the gun as to adapt it to the person using the same, and so that when the gun is brought to the shoulder the sights will come naturally in line with the eye without delay.
It will be seen that this butt-piece can be used with pistols of different kinds, the buttpiece being readily removed from the grip of the pistol when it is desired to use the pistol in the ordinary manner.
The means employed allow the butt-piece to be raised or lowered with convenience, and hold the parts rigidly together at any point of the adjustment.
Having thus fully described my device, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is r 1. The combination of the stock B and the butt-piece A, when the said butt-piece is adapted to be adjusted bodily upon the said stock, substantially as described and shown.
2. The combination, with the butt A and grip B, of the slotted plate 0, the plate D, the sliding block b, and screw E, substantially as described and shown.
3. The combination, with the buttpiece A, adjust-ably secured to the grip B, of the plate 0, having the stud d, and the plate D, having the socketsf, substantially as described and I GEORGE SMITH.
