T. c. JOHNSON & F. F. KNOUS. COMBINED PEEP SIGHT AND OP EN SIGHT FOR FIREARMS APPLICATION FILED AUGJO, 191T.
UNETED TAEES PATENT OFFICE.
THOMAS C. JOHNSON AND FRANKLIN F. KNOUS, OF NEW HAVEN, CONNECTICUT,
ASSIGNORS T0 WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS (30., OF NEW HAVEN, CON- NECTICUT, A CORPORATION.
COMBINED PEEP-SIGHT AND OPEN SIGHT FOR FIREARMS.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, THOMAS C. JoHNsoN and FRANKLIN F. KNoUs, citizens of the United States, residing at New Haven, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Combined Peep-Sights and Open Sights for Firearms; and We do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the characters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawing constitute part of this application, and represent, in-
Figure 1 a broken plan'view of a gunbarrel to which our improved combined rear peep-sight and open-sight for firearms is applied, the sight being set for the use of the opensight.
Fig. 2 a view thereof in side elevation with the forward end of the sight-base in vertical section.
Fig. 3 a sectional view on the line 33 of Fig. 2, looking in the direction indicated.
Fig. i a corresponding view with the peep-sight swung into position for use.
Fig. 5 a sectional view on the line 5-5 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 6 a detached plan view of the sightbase.
Fig. 7 a detached plan view of the pivotal sight-piece.
Our invention relates to an improved combined rear peep-sight and open-sight for firearms, the object being to produce a simple, cheap, efiicient and convenient combination rear sight adapted to provide at the will of the user of the arm, a peep-sight or an open-sight, as he may desire.
With these ends in view, our invention consists in a combined rear, peep-sight and open-sight for firearms, having certain de tails of construction and combinations of parts, as will be hereinafter described and pointed out in the claim.
In carrying out our invention as herein shown, we form a one-piece sight-base comprising a yielding shank 6 formed at its forward end with a fastening head 7 having two parallel side flanges 8 bent downward and a tapped screw-hole for the re- Specification of Letters Patent.

ception of a fastening-screw 11 formed with a beveled head 12 adapted to fit snugly into a transverse groove 13 in the gun-barrel 14. In applying the sight to the gun-barrel, the screw 11 is first positioned in the groove 13 after which the sight is placed upon the gun-barrel so that its screw-hole 10 registers with the screw 11 which is then turned by a screw-driver inserted into its leaf until the head 7 is firmly seated upon the top of the gun-barrel upon which it is prevented from swerving in either direction by the flanges 8.
The said shank is widened at its rear end to form a head 9, the rear end of which is turned upward, as shown, to form a bifurcated knuckle 15 having a central slot 16 for the reception of the knuckle 17 of a sightpiece comprising a leaf 18 having a V-shaped notch 19, forming an open-sight, and a leaf 20 located at a right angle to the said leaf 18 and having a perforation 21, forming a peep-sight, the said sight-piece being pivotally mounted upon the head 9 by means of a pin 22 passing through the knuckles 15 and 17 already mentioned. By rocking the sight-piece rearwardly, the leaf 18 containing the notch 19, is lifted into the vertical position, as shown by full lines in Fig. 2, while by swinging the sight-piece forwardly, the leaf 20 containing the perforation 21, is brought into the vertical position as shown by broken lines in the same figure, the sight-piece being frictionally held in either position.
For adjusting the sight for range, I employ a range-screw 23 mounted in a tapped opening 24 in the rear end of the shank 6 and impinging upon the top of the barrel 14 as shown in Fig. 2, the tapped opening bein intersected by a longitudinal slot 25 whic provides for binding the screw 23.
We claim In a combined rear, peep-sight and 0 en sight for firearms, the combination with a one-piece sight-base adapted at its forward end to be applied to a gun-barrel and having a yielding shank the rear end of which mounts a gage-adjusting screw and which is widened and folded forward upon itself to form a knuckle having a central slot, of a sight-piece having a complementary knuckle and being thus adapted to be pivthis specification in the presence of two subotally mounted upon the rear end of the scribing Witnesses. said shank, and comprising a leaf having THOMAS C. JOHNSON. an 0 en slot formin an open-si ht, and a leaf tzinding at a fight-angle t?) the said. FRANKLIN KNOUS' open-sight leaf and having a perforation Witnesses: forming a peep-sight. FRANK A. PAUL,
In testimony whereof, We have signed MARTHA M. BAHNSEN.
