ORRIE BURTON SNOW, OF MOUNTAIN TOP, ARKANSAS.
CHOKE ATTACIEIENT FOR SHOTGUNS.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ORRIE BURTON SNOW, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mountain To in the county of Franklin and State of Ar Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ohoke Attachments for Shotguns, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to choke attachments for shot guns, the object thereof is to provide a simple and comparatively cheap device of this character which may be connected or disconnected at will to any of the standard types of shot guns.
To the accomplishment of the recited object and others coordinate therewith, the preferred embodiment of the invention resides in that construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter described, illustrated in the accompanying-drawings and embraced within the scope of the appended claims.
In said drawings :Figure I is a side elevation embodying the invention, and the manner of attaching the same to a single barrel shot gun, and Fig. II is a bottom plan view thereof. Fig. III is a longitudinal sec tion taken along lines 33 of Fig. I. Fig. IV is a view in perspective of the coupling clamp. Fig. V is a transverse sectional view taken along lines 55 of Fig. I. Fig. VI is a top lan illustration showing a slightly modified form of the invention ap lied to a double barrel shot gun, and Fig. II is a side elevation of the same. Fig. VIII is a transverse sectional view taken along lines 88 of Fig. VII, and Fig. IX is a transverse fragmentary sectional view showing the means employed for attaching the cou ling clamp to the choke attachment or short arrel.
Similar reference characters designate cor responding parts throughout the several views.
The terminal of the gun barrel and the choke attachment proper, which latter may obviously be full or partly choked as desired, are designated respectively by the numerals l and 2, and are adapted to be connected by a coupling clamp 3, which in the present instance has a contour conforming to the cross sectional contour of the gun barrel. The lower ends 4 of this coupling clamp are disposed at right angles and these portions are apertured, as at 5, to receive the bolt 6, one end of which is provided with a checkered thumb screw 7, the other enlarged terminal 8 being fastened by any suitable means,

such for example, as the screw 9, to the bifurcated cam head 10 of the lever 11.. The connection between the said clamp 3 and the barrel 1 is attained by the provision of a bayonet-slot 12 and the bead or front sight 13, the lower portion of said slot terminating in a substantially semicircular shaped. struck-out portion 14, the latter serving to preclude any possibility of the parts becoming disconnected. The longitudinal projections 15 of the clamp have their distal ends constructed to present oppositely disposed dovetail-shaped enlargements or heads 16, the outer faces thereof being cut away in. order that the fastening screws 17 will be countersunk when these portions of the clamp are attached to the choke device. In this connection, it is desired to construct this cut-out portion so that the same will be some what larger and thereby permit an adjustment of the said choke attachment in exact registration with gun barrels of varying dimensions.
The principle of the invention is maintained when the device is applied to a double barrel gun, the only difference being that the struck-out portion 14 is eliminated.
The operation of the device is as follows: The con ling member and the short choke barrel Wi lbe considered as an entirety, while it will appear evident that the same are detachably connected to each other, and that a full choked attachment may be used interchangeably with a partly choked attach.- ment in an obvious manner. Now when it is desired to make use of the attachment, the free end 18 of the lever 11 is forced outwardly, and the clamp inserted about the end of the gun barrel so that the sight 13 will be in alinement with the struck-out portion 14 or the terminal of the bayonet slot 12. The device is then pushed forward slightly, given a quarter turn and the lever 11 is closed, the bolt 6 having been previously adjusted to insure a perfectly tight joint. The relations thus assumed by the several parts are similar to those illustrated in Fig. 1 of the accompanying drawings. The attachment may be readily removed by a reversal of the foregoin operations.
.t should be understood that in its broader aspect the invention comprehends the em ployment not only of the various means described, but of equivalent means for performing the recited functions. While the arrangement shown is thought, at the present time, to be preferable, it is desired to reserve the right to effect such modifications and variations thereof as may come fairly Within the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described the invention, What is claimed. as new, is
l. The combination with a gun barrel and a choke attachment therefor, of a coupling detachably connected to said barrel and at tachment, and a cam lever co-acting with said coupling and adapted to clamp the same transversely with respect to the gun and. the
V attachment.
2. The combination with a gun barrel and a choke attachment therefor, of a coupling detachably connected to said barrel and attachment, and a pivoted cam lever co-acting with said coupling and adapted to clamp the same with respect to the gun and the attachment, the pivot of said lever being ar'ljustable in a horizontal plane. 4
3. The combination with a gun barrel and a choke attachment having diametrically opposed slots therein, of a detachable coupling having a slot for engagement With the sight of the gun barrel, members adapted to fit in said slots of the attachment, and means for clamping said coupling to the barrel and attachment.
4. The combination with a gun barrel and a choke attachment having diametrically opposed dove-tail recesses therein, of a dotachable coupling having an angular slot for engagement with the sight of the gun barrel, longitudinally projecting members having terminally enlarged portions adapted to fit said dove-tail recesses, and means for clamping said coupling to the barrel and attach.- ment.
5. The combination With a gun barrel and a choke attachment, of a coupling deta'chably connected to said barrel and attachment, and having downwardly projectin apertured flanges, a bolt extending through said apertures, a cam lever eccentrically mounted on the terminal of said bolt and engaging the outer face of one of the flanges, and means carried by the other end of the bolt for ad justing the pressure of said cam on tho flange.
6. The combination. with a gun barrel and a choke attachment, of .a coupling detachably connected to said barrel and attachment, and having downwardly projecting apertured flanges, a bolt extending through said apertures, a bifurcated cam lever eccentrically mounted on the terminal of said bolt and en gaging the outer face of one of the flanges, and a thumb screw carried by the other end of the bolt for adjusting the pressure of said cam on the flange.
7. The combination with a gun barrel and a choke attachment therefor of a coupling having an adjustable cam lever which is adapted to clamp the same with respect to the gun. and the attachment.
In testimony whereof I hereunto aflix my signature, in presence of two Witnesses.
