To all whom it 'may concern:

Be it known that we, GEORGE H. GARRI- soN and WILLIAM A. HILLIs, both citizens of the United States, and residents, respectively, of Olympia, in the county of Thurston and Stat-e of l/Vashington, and of Portland, in the county of Multnomah and State of Oregon, have invented a new and Improved Gun-Sight, of which the following is a full, clear7 and eXact description.

This invention relates to gun sights and is particularly useful in connection with devices of this character intended for use with single-barreled shot guns.

The object of the invention is to provide a simple, strong and durable gun sight which may be securely removably mounted upon a gun barrel, and which provides a sighting groove to be used in connection with the foresight of the gun.

A further object of the invention is to provide a gun sight having a clamp which may be'removably secured to a gun barrel, or at the same time, to the gun barrel and the magazine barrel in certain types of repeating uns.

The invention consists in the construction and combination of parts to be more particularly described hereinafter and fully set forth in the claims.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specication, in which Figure l represents a portion of a singlebarreled shot-gun showing the barrel with our gun-sight mounted thereupon; Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the device; Fig. 3 is a transverse vertical section of the device; Fig. 4 is an end elevation of a detail; Fig. 5 is an end elevation of a modified form of the detail shown in Fig. 4 Fig. 6 is a perspective view of a detail; Fig. 7 is a side elevation of a gun showing a modified form of our invention attached thereto; Fig. 8 is a vertical transverse section on the line 8 8 of Fig. 7, of the modified form shown in Fig. 7; Fig. 9 is a perspective view of a detail of the form shown in Figs. 7 and 8; Fig. 10 is a side elevation of a gun showing a further modified form of our invention mounted thereupon; and Fig. 11 is a front elevation of the modification shown in Fig. IO, the Oun barrel upon which the same is mounted rbeing shown in transverse vertical section on the line 11-11 of Fig. 10.

. Referring more particularly to the drawings, 1 represents the barrel of the usual single-barreled shot-gun, the barrel being cylindrical in form and having a smooth outer surface. Our gun-sight for a gun barrel of this type consists of a split ring 2, having

3 and 4 adjacent to the split, laterally and parallelly disposed to form clamp flanges. The clamp flange 3 is provided with a threaded opening therethrough, while the clamp fiange 4 is provided with an opening therethrough and a recess at said opening at the outer side of the flange. A threaded pin 5 having a grooved head 6 is mounted in the opening in the flange 4 and in the threaded opening in the flange 3. When the pin 5 is turned it draws the clamp flanges together or forces them apart. When the sight is mounted upon a gun barrel and the screw pin 5 is turned, the clamp flanges may be forced together to clamp the sides firmly upon the barrel as. shown in Fig. 3. The split ring at a point substantially opposite to the clamp flanges is provided with an extension 7 having a flat surface. The extension has openings therethrough and the ring is interiorly provided with recesses adjacent to the openings, in which are located screws 8, the heads 9 of which seat in the recesses on the inner side of the ring; thus, the latter is adapted to fit snugly upon the gun barrel. The sight block 10 seats upon the surface of the eXtension 7 and is provided with threaded openings adapted to receive the screws S by means of which the sight block is rigidly secured to the split ring. The sight block 10 may be of any desired form and may be elevated above the gun barrel in any degree, by means of the interposition of a shim 11 between the extension 7 and the sight block 8. The sight block may be provided with a groove of any desired form such as shown in Fig. 4 or Fig. 5, to correspond to the groove formed by `the connecting rib between the barrels in a double-barreled gun. It will be understood that this adjustable sight may be mounted at substantially any point between the foresight of the gun and the stock.

In certain forms of repeating shot-guns a magazine barrel 12 is mounted underneath the gun barrel 1 as shown in Fig. 7. We provide-a sight for guns of this type, which consists of' a clamp 13 having a circular portion adapted to embrace the magazine barrel and having the extremities extended and shaped so as partially to embrace the gun barrel. A screw pin 14 secured to the opposite sides of the clamp and passing between the gun barrel and the magazine barrel, serves to secure the clamp in position. The sight block 15 having the sighting groove 16 has extremities 17 disposed downward to embrace the upper portieri of the gun barrel underneath the extremities 18 of the clamp members. Thus, when the clamp is rigidly secured in place it holds the sight block securely upon the gun barrel. lf it is desired to offset the sight block above the gun barrel, a curved shim 19 may be inserted between the gun barrel and the sight block.

For automatic guns in which the magazine barrel is of too great a diameter to be embraced by the clamp, we provide a plate 2() having a circular opening 21' adapted to engage with the extension 22 usually found at the front extremity of the magazine barrel. A circular opening 23 is adapted to receive the barrel 1. Beyond the opening 23 the plate is laterally disposed to rest upon the upper portion of the gun barrel, as shown most clearly in Fig. 10, and to 'form a sight block holder 25. The laterally-disposed portion of the plate is provided with openings and recesses in which are located screws 24 by means of which the sight block 10 is secured to the laterally-disposed sight block holder 25.

Having thus described our invention we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:

. l. A gun sight, comprising a split ring having laterally-disposed flanges, and a Screw adapted to force said flanges together, said split ring having an extension presenting a flat surface, al sight block having a groove and adapted to rest upon said flat surface, a shim between said sight block and said surface, and means for securing`said sight block to said ring.

2. A gun sight, comprising a split ring, means for clamping said ring in position, said split ring having a substantially fiat surface and an opening therethrough, said ring further having `a recess on the inner side thereof adjacent to said opening, a sight block having a threaded opening, a screw adapted to be mounted in said opening of said ring and having a head in said recess, said screw being adapted to engage with said threaded opening of said sight block, said sight block having a sight groove, and a shim between said block and said extension.

8. A gun sight, comprising a split ring having laterally disposed flanges, and a screw pin adapted to.force said flanges together, said split ring having an extension present'- ing a flat surface, and openings through said extensions, recesses on the inner side of said ring adjacent to said openings, a sight block having threaded openings, screws adapted to be mounted in said openings of said ring and having heads in said recesses, said screws being adapted to engage with the said threaded openings of said sight block, said sight block having a sight groove, and a shim between said sight block and said extension, and having openings to receive said screws.
