SIGHT FOR FIREARMS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed May 22. 1919. Serial No. 298,887.
the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The invention relates to front sights for rifles, guns and other firearms, and its object is to provide a new and improved sight for firearms arranged to permit convenient adjustment of the sight on the barrel and to allow of securely fastening the adjusted si ht in position on the barrel.
Vith these and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction as hereinafter shown and described and then specifically pointed out in the claims.
A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the sight as applied to the muzzle end of the barrel of a firearm;
Fig, 2 is a plan view of the same;
Fig. 3 is a sectional plan view of the sight;
Fig. 4 is a cross section of the sight as applied, the section being on the line 4-4 of Fig. 1; and
Fig. 5 is a longitudinal central section of the same on the line 5-5 of Fig. 2.
The body 10 of the sight is I provided with a suitable bead 11 and with a base 12, preferably in the form of a dovetail tongue fitting into a corres ondingly shaped transverse guideway 13 ormed on the top of the barrel 14 of the firearm near the front end thereof, as plainly shown in the drawings. The base 12 is provided at its middle with a longitudinally extending bore 15 in which are mounted to slide clamping pins 16 and 17 extending to the tapering sides of the base, the outer ends of the clamping ends 16 and 17 being tapered corresponding to the tapering sides of the base and being adapted to clampingly engage the tapering side walls of the guideway 13, as plainly shown in Fig. 5. n
The base 12 is provided with a transversely extending tapped hole 20 in which screws a screw 21 having a conical inner end mm o! m. genu ne, be obtained to:
22 adapted to engage the inner ends of the clamping pins 16 and 17 so as to force the same outwaird in clamping contact with the side walls of the guideway 13 on screwing the screw 21 inward in the tapped hole 20. It will be noticed that when the clamping pins 16 and 17 are forced outwardly their outer beveled ends clampingly engage the side walls of the guideway 13 thus securely fastening the sight in position on the barrel 14 of the firearm.
From the foregoing it will be seen that by the arrangement described the base 12 can be readily pushed in place in the guideway 13 and then on screwing up the screw 21 the sight is securely fastened in position on the barrel 11 by the clamping plns 16 and 17 engaging the side walls of the guideway 13, as above explained.
When it is desired to adjust the sight it is only necessary for the user to slightly retract the screw 21 to allow shifting of the sight in a transverse direction on the barrel 14 until the bead 11 is in the desired position. The operator now screws up the screwv 21 to fasten the si ht in place on the barrel, as above explained.
Having thus described our invention, we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. A sight for a firearm having a guideway in the barrel thereof comprising a body provided with a base adapted to engage said guideway, clamping means slidable in the said base and adapted to engage the sides of the guideway, and a screw screwing in the said base and engaging the said clamping. means to force the latter into clamping contact with the guideway to fasten the sight in place on the barrel.
2. A sight for a firearm having a dovetail groove in the barrel thereof comprising a body provided with a bead and with a dovetail base adapted to engage said groove, clamping pins slidable transversely in the said base and adapted to engage the side walls of the said guideway, and a screw screwing in the said base and having a conical inner end engaging the inner ends of the said clamping pins to move the latter into clamping contact with the walls of the guideway to securely fasten the sight to the barrel of the firearm.
