Description

June 13, 1950 EHWUH HUUW w. G. CAST ER 2,511,245
ADJUSTABLE PEEP SIGHT Filed April 2, 1948 Inventor W6)! 6? Caster Patented June 13, 1950 UNITED STATES Ski-\HUH KUUM PATENT OFFICE 1 Claim.
The present invention relates to adjustable peep sights and it consists in the combinations, constructions and arrangements of parts herein described and claimed.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a peep sight which is adjustable for both elevation and windage.
A further object of the invention is the provision of an adjustable peep sight which, when adjusted, will not jar loose due to the shock of firing the piece upon which it is used or from other normal shocks received by the piece.
A still further object of the invention is the provision of a countersunk opening for a peep sight whereby the same will partially eliminate glare and help keep the opening free of dust and grime.
Another object of the invention is the provision of an adjustable peep sight which is composed of a minimum number of parts, which is inexpensive to manufacture, which is simple in its construction and operation and which is eflicient and effective in use.
Other and further objects of the invention will become apparent from a reading of the following specification taken in conjunction with the drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevational view of an embodiment of the invention in use upon a rifle,
Figure 2 is an enlarged side elevational view of the sight forming the present invention,
Figure 3 is a rear elevational view of Figure 2,
Figure 4 is a front elevational view thereof,
Figure 5 is a plan view thereof,
Figure 6 is a sectional view taken along line C6 of Figure 5, and
Figure '7 is an enlarged exploded view showing the principal elements of the invention in perspective.
Generally there is provided an adjustable peep sight having a base upon which is longitudinally and slidably mounted an elevation plate in which is transversely and slidably mounted a windage member having an integrally formed peep sight. Means is provided for holding both the elevation plate and the windage member in adjusted positions and the sight is countersunk to avoid clogging the same with grime and dirt and at the same time providing a measure of protection against glare.
Referring more particularly to the drawing, there is shown therein a base plate I having a longitudinally curved bottom, as indicated at H, to conform with the longitudinal curve of the top of a rifle breech I2 and hollow ground, as indicated at l3, to conform with the circumferential curve of the breech |2.
The plate I0 is provided with a downwardly and rearwardly sloping upper face I and has a pair of vertically extending countersunk openings I for the reception of a pair of screws 6 for fastening the base to the breech.
The base plate Ill is provided at its forward end with a pair of upwardly and inwardly extending arms I! each provided with a laterally extending threaded opening I8 for the reception of screws IS.
A forwardly extending tongue 20 of an elevation plate 2| is slidably engaged by the arms l1 and the elevation plate 2| is also provided with a transversely extending block 22 having a transversely extending circular opening 23 formed therein and a vertically extending slot 24 communicating with the circular opening.
A windage member is provided and consists of a block 25 from which depends a transversely extending circular guide member 26 integrally connected with the block 25 by means of a vertically extending connector 21.
The plate 2| is provided with a centrally located longitudinal slot 28 for the reception of a screw 29 which engages with a threaded opening 30 in the base plate Ill.
The tongue 20 is centrally provided at the forward end of its upper face with a V-shaped slot 3| and the block 25 has centrally and integrally mounted thereon an upwardly extending peep sight 32 having the conventional longitudinally extending opening 33 therein with a countersunk portion 34 at the rear thereof.
In operation, it will be understood that the base plate I0 is fastened to the breech |2 by means of the screws l6 and that the elevation plate 2| is forwardly and rearwardly slidable upon the plate H) but that, due to the inclined surface of the base plate In, the forward and rearward movement of the elevation plate will cause the same to be raised and lowered with respect to the breech of the rifle. The elevation plate may be locked in any selected position by tightening the screws l9 and 29. The block 25 and its attached peep sight 32 are movable in a lateral direction to take care of windage, the guide member 26 being slidably mounted in the opening 23. Screws 35 are threadably mounted in either end of the opening 23 and may be used to lock the peep sight in any selected lateral position with regard to the elevation plate 2|.
The counter sunk portion 34 allows the opening 55 33 to be kept clean and at the same time provides 3 a partial protection against glare. The slot 31 allows the elevation plate to be lowered an additional distance without cutting 011 the view through the peep sight toward the front sight 36 of the rifle.
W'hile but one form of the invention has been shown and described herein, it will be readily apparent to those skilled in the art that many minor modifications may be made herein without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the appended claim.
What is claimed is:
A device of the character described comprising a base plate afiixed to the breech of a rifle and having a rearwardly and downwardly extending upper face, an elevation plate longitudinally slidable upon the base plate and having a longitudinal slot therein, a forwardly extending tongue for the elevation plate having a centrally disposed V-shaped groove formed in the upper face at the forward end thereof, a pair of upwardly and inwardly extending arms integrally formed with the base plate and confining the tongue therebetween, a screw extending through said slot and l 4 threadably mounted in the base plate, screws extending transversely through said arms andbearing on said tongue and screws for locking the windage member in selected lateral positions with regard to the elevation plate.
