Abstract

A sight body of sheet metal has an upturned flange at one end defining a sight notch and downturned side flanges extending from the other end and pivoted at their rear ends about a transverse screw, threaded through a support member for adjusting the sight body laterally. An integral spring tongue on the body engages the support and urges the sight body to swing upwardly. The body has a laterally elongated opening near the forward flange and a headed screw in the opening is threaded into the support to effect vertical adjustments. Interengaging notches and detents on the screws and body hold the screws in adjusted positions.

This invention relates to any adjustable sightwith a built-in ratchet mechanism for fire-arms. It is compact, very simple, highly resistant to misadjustment and very readily handled. It is also very stable, thereby leading to a high precision. "In addition, the sight according to the invention is such that it does not need" springs and ratchet pushes. V p
The sight according to'the invention is characteriz'ed in that it comprises-the combination of a s'mallbottom plate on which is pivotably connected a board having a small thickness, but a high resistance to rotation and comprising the sight notch, a means allowing to shift transversally and means allowing the said board to shift angularly the said board relative to the said small bottom plate.
The latter has one of its ends traversed transversally by a set screw on which bears the said board which is in turn designed to cooperate with a second set screw engaging both the said board and the said bottom plate. The said board is stamped and profiled to define a resilient tongue the free end of which permanently contacts the said small bottom plate. The free edge of the said board is bent upwardly and is centrally provided with the sight notch.
These essential features may be carried out under very different forms so that the sight may be perfectly adapted to the type of fire-arm being equipped.
These essential elements as well as other characteristics will be more apparent in the following detailed description of a practical and non limitative embodiment shown in the enclosed drawings in which:
FIG. 1 shows diagrammatically a fire-arm to which is adapted the sight forming the present the invention;
FIG. 2 is a perspective view of the said sight;
FIG. 3 is an exploded view of the embodiment of FIG. 2;
FIG. 4 is a plan view of the embodiment of FIGS. 2 and 3 on an enlarged scale;
FIG. 5 is a side view in the direction indicated by the arrow F5 of FIG. 4;
FIGS. 6 and 7 are two end views respectively in the directions indicated by the arrows F6-F7 of FIG. 4;
FIG. 8 is a longitudinal section on the line VIll-VIII of FIG. 4;
FIGS. 9 and 10 are sections on the lines IXIX and X-X of FIG. 4.
This embodiment comprises a small bottom plate 1 one end of which is provided with a bead 2 traversed throughout by a threaded hole 3. A board 4 having a small thickness, but a high rigidity is stamped and profiled to have two longitudinal edges 5-6 bent under 90 and extended forwardly in the form of two arms 7-8 having free ends forming two small flanges 9-10 separated by a distance D slightly greater than the length L of the said bead 2 of the small bottom plate 1. The said flanges 9-10 are each provided with a central hole 11-12 respectively the diameter of each of which is slightly greater than the diameter of the threaded hole 3 of the said small bottom plate. Between the said arms 7-8, the board 4 has a resilient tongue 13 bent downwardly to normally contact the small bottom plate 1 when the sight is raised.
The end of the said board which is opposite to the said flanges 9-10 is flanged upwardly and is centrally provided with the sight notch 14. Finally, the said board 4 is provided with an oblong hole 15 situated between twosmall bosses 16-17 which are also oblong.
'Th said 'board'4' is brought into such position that the holes 11-12 of the said flanges 9-10 are situated coaxiallywith the threaded hole 3 of the bead 2 of the small bottom plate 1. In this position, a screw 18 engages both 'th'e said flanges and the said bead. The annular back face of the head of the said screw has a succession of radial notches20, whereas the free end thereof has 'a tip '21 with a smaller diameter provided with a peripheral groove 22 for engaging a retaining part 23; Below the said oblong opening 15 of the board 4, the small bottom plate 1 is traversed by a threaded hole 24. A screw 25 the head 26 of which is also provided, on its annular back face, with a succession of slots 27, passes through the said oblong hole 15 of the board and threadedly engages the threaded hole 24 of the small bottom plate 1.
Thus, a double adjustment may be conveniently and rapidly made either by laterally shifting the board 4 in the direction of screw 18 in accordance with the rotating movement thereof in either direction, or angularly relative to the said small bottom plate in either up or down direction in accordance with the rotating movement of the said screw 25.
Whatever the relative position of the board 4 may be, the latter will be subjected to a resilient stress owing to the resilient distortion of the said tongue 13 the free end of which permanently contacts the said small bottom plate 1.
It will be observed that, in this embodiment, use is made of a minimum number of parts.
The sight according to the invention is also such that it may be either a micrometric sight without distance indication as previously described, or a less accurate sight but with marked distances.
The sight according to the invention is also such that it permits adaptation of an independent andreadily removable leaf. Such sight leaf could be combined with or replaced by the flange portion of the board 4 having the sight notch 14. In that case, the said sight leaf could be fastened by any known means such as sliding, snapping, fastening with elastic pressure or the like.
It is apparent that the invention extends to any embodiment using equivalent constituting parts or parts having equivalent functions.
What I claim is:
1. An adjustable sight for a firearm, comprising:
a support member having a first transverse threaded bore therethrough adjacent one end thereof perpendicular to the line of sight and a second transverse threaded bore adjacent its other end, said second bore being perpendicular to said line of sight and to said first bore;
a body having a pair of arms extending from one end thereof provided with aligned apertures aligned with said first bore and being outwardly of opposite sides of said support member;
a first screw threaded through said first bore, extending through said aligned apertures and having means bearing against the outer sides of said arms, said body having a resilient tongue between said arms, bearing against said support member to resiliently bias said body to pivot upwardly about said first screw; 1
an opening in said body aligned with said second bore and having upward projections at its lateral sides;
4. An adjustable sight as defined in claim 1 wherein said opening and said projections are laterally elongated.
5. An adjustable sight as defined in claim 1 wherein said body is a thin plate member and said arms comprise the extensions of flanges bent downwardly therefrom ,at about thereto, said means defining said sight notch comprising a flange bent upwardly from said other end at less than 90.
6. An adjustable sight as defined in claim 5 wherein said resilient tongue is integral with said body.

Claims (6)

1. An adjustable sight for a firearm, comprising: a support member having a first transverse threaded bore therethrough adjacent one end thereof perpendicular to the line of sight and a second transverse threaded bore adjacent its other end, said second bore being perpendicular to said line of sight and to said first bore; a body having a pair of arms extending from one end thereof provided with aligned apertures aligned with said first bore and being outwardly of opposite sides of said support member; a first screw threaded through said first bore, extending through said aligned apertures and having means bearing against the outer sides of said arms, said body having a resilient tongue between said arms, bearing against said support member to resiliently bias said body to pivot upwardly about said first screw; an opening in said body aligned with said second bore and having upward projections at its lateral sides; a second screw threaded in said second bore, extending upwardly through said opening and having a head provided with notches engageable with said projections; and means at the other end of said body defining a sight notch.
2. An adjustable sight as Defined in claim 1 wherein said first bore extends through an upwardly extending portion of said support member.
3. An adjustable sight as defined in claim 2 wherein the distance between said arms is greater than the corresponding dimension of said portion of said support member.
4. An adjustable sight as defined in claim 1 wherein said opening and said projections are laterally elongated.
5. An adjustable sight as defined in claim 1 wherein said body is a thin plate member and said arms comprise the extensions of flanges bent downwardly therefrom at about 90* thereto, said means defining said sight notch comprising a flange bent upwardly from said other end at less than 90*.
6. An adjustable sight as defined in claim 5 wherein said resilient tongue is integral with said body.
