GUN-SIGHT.
Application filed May 24, 1915.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DUN CAN J. BUCHANAN, a citizen of Great Britain, residing at Vindsor, in the Province of Ontario and Dominion of Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gun-Sights; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates broadly to improvements in fire arms and specifically to the sights thereof, the object of the invention being to provide an extremely simple, inexpensive and efficient vertically adjustable sight for varying the accurate range of a gun or rifle to which it is applied.
With this object in view, the invention resides in certain novel features of construction and in the unique combination of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In describing the invention, I shall refer to the accompanying drawings wherein like reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views and wherein:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a portion of a gun showing the application of the improved sight thereto; Fig. 2 is a top plan view; Figs. 3 and 4 are vertical sections of the barrel showing the sight in two of its adjusted positions, and Fig. 5 is a bottom plan View of the sight detached from the barrel.
In this drawing which constitutes a part of the application, B indicates the barrel of a gun of any one of the numerous designs, the upper side of this barrel being provided at an appropriate point with a dove-tail groove 1 receiving therein a clovetail anchoring block 2 to the upper side of which a longitudinally disposed substantially horizontal leaf spring 3 is secured,
. the other end of this spring being shown in the present application as bent upwardly and provided with a notch 41: thereby constituting a sight to be alined with the target and the usual additional sight on the barrel.
Interposed between the end of the spring 3 remote from the anchoring block 2 and the barrel, is a rotatable disk 5 which is revolubly mounted on a rivet or the like 6 depending from said spring, the disk in question being provided throughout approximately one-fourth of its circumference Specification of Letters Patent.

with an arcuate depending cam 7 gradually increasing in height from one end to the other and provided on its lower edge with a plurality of teeth 8 adapted to engage a single tooth 9 which is carried by the barrel B, when the disk 5 is rotated in the proper direction, this amount of rotation in either direction being limited by the stops 5 on the disk 5 coming into contact with the spring 3, (see Fig. 2.) As will be evident by an inspection of the drawing, such rotation of the disk causes the cam 7 to adjust the spring and the sight carried thereby the desired amount for accurately regulating the range of the fire arm. When the spring and the sight are in their lowermost position, the tooth 9 is received by a notch 10 in the disk, whereby the latter is effectively held against being accidentally rotated.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, it will be evident that although very simple construction has been provided for carrying out the object of the invention, the same will be very efficient in operation and will possess a. number of advantageous features. Particular emphasis is laid upon the fact that all parts of the improved sight lie in extremely close proximity to the barrel when lowered, this being a rather desirable feature. The fact that all parts of the sight may be attached to a gun barrel simply by the insertion of the anchoring block 2, is likewise deemed a rather important feature.
I claim:
1. The combination with a gun barrel and a sight carrying leaf spring secured at one end thereto; of a rotatable cam member interposed between the barrel and the spring, and coacting locking teeth on the cam and the barrel.
2. The combination with a gun barrel and a flat sight carrying leaf spring secured to the upper side thereof at one end; of a disk rotatably mounted between the free end of the spring and the barrel, and an arcuate cam depending from the disk and gradually increasing in height from one of its ends to its other end.
3. The combination with a gun barrel and a fiat sight carrying leaf spring secured to the upper side thereof at one end; of a disk rotatably mounted between the free end of the spring and the barrel, an arcuate cam projecting from said disk and gradually increasing in height from one of its ends to its other end, teeth on the edge of said cam, and a fixed tooth carried by the gun barrel and engaged by said teeth to retain the disk in adjusted position.
4. The combination with a gun barrel and a flat sight carrying leaf spring secured to the upper side thereof at one end; of a pivot depending from the free end of said spring, a disk rotatably mounted on said pivot, a spring raising cam depending from the disk and gradually increasing in height from one of its ends to its other end, teeth on the lower edge of said cam, and an additional and fixed tooth rising from the barrel for engagement by said, teeth.
5. A device of the class described comprising a flat sight carrying leaf spring having means at one end for attachment to a gun barrel, a pivot depending from the other end of said spring, a disk rotatably mounted on said pivot, and a spring raising cam depending from the disk and gradually increasing in height from one of its ends to its other end.
6. A device of the class described comprising a flat sight carrying leaf spring having means at one end for attachment to a gun barrel, a pivot depending from the other end end of said spring, a disk rotatably mounted on said pivot, a spring raising cam depending from the disk and gradually increasing in height from one of its ends to its other end, teeth on the edge of said cam for coaction with the fixed tooth to be secured to the gun barrel, and stops on the disk for contact with the spring, whereby to limit the rotary movement of said disk.
