UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GUN-SIGHT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 28, 1917.
Application filed January 6, 1917. Serial No. 140,924.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS E. KING, a citizen of the United States, residing at Frances, in the county of Pacific and State of WVashington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gun-Sights; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention has for its object to provide an improved gun sight which may be quickly and conveniently adjust e d tg suit the range of the firearm.
"Kno thE Ubject-is'the provision of means for retaining the sight in adjusted position, subsequent to adjustment thereof.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter specifically described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1 represents a transverse sectional view, partly broken away, through the barrel of a gun, showing the invention applied to use,
Fig. 2 represents a fragmentary side elevation of the gun barrel and sight,
Fig. 3 represents aperspective view of the sight removed,
Fig. 4 represents a fragmentary sectional view through a gun barrel, illustrating a modified type of the gun sight, and
Fig. 5 represents a perspective view of the modified type of gun sight detached.
Referring to the drawing in detail, where in similar reference numerals designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, the numeral 5 indicates the fragment of a gun barrel, having the usual dovetail groove 6 therein, receiving the correspondingly shaped bottom portion of the base 7 which is detachably secured in the groove 6 and is provided with an upstanding integral lug 8, forming a support for the gun sight.
The lug 8 is formed with a vertical open ing 9 in which is slidably mounted the spring plates 10, which are connected at one end by a loop 11 receiving a shank 12 of the sight element which is provided with headed terminals 18, whereby the shank is secured in position in the loop 11. The opposite terminals of the spring plates 10 are extended divergently, as indicated at 14-, so as to frictionally engage the side walls of the opening 9 and secure the gun sight against accidental movement in the lug and base 7. The plate 10 may also be secured in adjusted position by a set screw 10', which is threaded in the upstanding lug 8 carried by the base 7.
In the modification of the invention illustrated in Figs. 1 and 5 the loop or annular member 15 connecting one end of the spring plates 16 is of greater diameter than the loop 11 in the structure of gun sight illustrated in Figs. 1 through 3, and the ends of the spring plates 16 opposite the annular member or loop 15 are extended divergently, as indicated at 17 to firmly engage the side walls of the opening 8 in the lug and base to secure the gun sight against accidental movement. The sight element includes a plate 18 fastened between the spring plates 16 and formed at its upper end with a bead or head 19, preferably of cylindrical formation and arranged concentrically within the loop or annular member 15.
WVhat I claim is:
1. A gun sight including a base member, a pair of plates slidably mounted in said base member, a loop carried by said plates, and a headed shank secured in said loop.
2. A gun sight including a base plate, a pair of spring plates having divergent lower terminals engaged with said base plate, a loop carried by said plates, and a headed shank carried by said loop.
3. A gun sight including a base member having a vertical opening therethrough, an
, adjusta bl e loep, diverging plates carried by W513 and frictionally engaging the Walls of the opening, and a sight element located in the loop and adjustable therewith.
In testimony whereof I afiiX my signature in presence of two witnesses.
THOS. E. KING.
