BRUSH 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 Filed March 20. 1953 Inuenior Lesier Z1 Hess By fltlomey Patented Jan. 16, 1934 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 1 Claim.
The present invention relates to new and useful improvements in brushes of the type including a handle and has for its primary object to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, a brush including a novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts through the medium of which the handle may be conveniently adjusted to and secured at diiferent angles relative to the brush head.
Other objects of the invention are to provide a brush of the aforementioned character which will be simple in construction, strong, durable, highly efficient and reliable in use, light in weight, compact and which may be manufactured at low cost.
All of the foregoing and still further objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent from a study of the following specification, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings wherein like characters of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, and wherein:
Figure 1 is a view in side elevation of a brush constructed in accordance with the present invention.
Figure 2 is a view in top plan thereof.
Figure 3 is a view in rear elevation of the brush.
Figure 4 is a detail view in vertical transverse section, taken substantially on the line 4-4 of Figure 1.
Figure 5 is a detail View in perspective of the lower portion of the handle.
Figure 6 is a detail view in perspective of the hinge member which is secured on the head for connecting the handle thereto.
Figure 7 is a detail view in perspective of the hinge member which is secured on the rear edge of the brush head for pivotally connecting the handle brace to said head.
Figure 8 is a detail view in perspective of the brace.
Figure 9 is a detail group view in perspective of the elements which secure the handle and the brace together in adjusted position.
Referring now to the drawings in detail, it will be seen that the embodiment of the invention which has been illustrated comprises a head which is designated generally by the reference numeral 1, said head including a back 2 from which wire bristles 3 extend.
The reference numeral 4 designates an elongated handle having secured on one end portion a hinge member 5 for connection with a complemental hinge member 6 which is secured on a forward portion of the back 2. The lower end of the handle 4 is beveled, as at 7, for abutting engagement with the back 2 when said handle is disposed at the angle shown in full lines in Fig ure 1 of the drawings relative to said back.
In its lower portion the handle 4 is further provided with a longitudinal slot 8 through which an adjustable brace 9 extends. The brace 9 is pivotally mounted for swinging movement in a vertical plane on a hinge. member 10 which is mounted vertically on the rear end of the back 2.
The brace 9 is provided with a longitudinal slot 11 which accommodates a headed bolt 12 which is mounted transversely in the handle 4 and which traverses the slot 8. A winged nut 13 is adjustably threaded on one end portion of the bolt 12. Washers 14 are mounted on the bolt 12 between the head of said bolt and the handle 4 and between the winged nut 13 and said handle.
It will thus be seen that the handle 4 is hingedly connected to the head 1 in a manner to permit adjustment of said handle to various positions as indicated in broken lines in Figure 1 of the drawings. When the winged nut 13 is tightened on the bolt 14 the sides of the handle 4 are drawn together in a manner to frictionally clamp the brace 9 in the slot 8 as will be apparent. When it is desired to adjust the handle 4 to various angles relative to the head 1, it is only necessary to unscrew the nut 13 sufiiciently to permit movement of said handle relative to the brace 9. The slot 8 is of suflicient length to permit swinging movement of the brace 9.
It is believed that the many advantages of a brush constructed in accordance with the present invention will be readily understood, and although the preferred embodiment of the invention is as illustrated and described, it is to be understood that changes in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of parts may be resorted to which will fall within the scope of the invention as claimed.
What is claimed is:
An adjustable handle for an implement, comprising a handle hingedly secured to the forward and upper portion of the implement, said handle having a longitudinally extending slot therein, a brace hingedly connected to the implement at a point rearwardly of said handle, said brace extending thru the slot in the handle and having a longitudinal slot therein, the slot in the handle being substantially greater in length than the width of said brace, a bolt mounted transversely in the handle and extending through the slot in the brace, and a nut threaded on the bolt for coaction with said bolt for frictionally clamping the handle on the brace.
