PAINTBRUSH EXTENSION HANDLE Filed Nov. 9, 1955 TMWoyZ'on BY 2%. M
INVENTOR" United. States Patent 2,792,581 PAINTBRUSH EXTENSION HANDLE Thomas M. Woyton, ElmonhN. Y. Application November 9, 1955, Serial No. 545,821 1 Claim. (c1. 15-144 This invention relates to a novel extension handle for paintbrushes and has for its primary object to provide novel means for detachably securing the handle of a paintbrush to an end of the extension handle and so that the axis of the paintbrush may be disposed at any desired angle relative to the axis of the extension handle most convenient to the user.
A further object of the invention is to provide an extension handle having a securing means for detachably securing the handle of a paintbrush thereto and whereby through the simple operation of tightening one fastening the paintbrush is secured to the extension handle at a desired angle relative thereto.
A further object of the invention is to provide an extension handle through the use of which the necessity of moving ladders and seaflolds will be minimized; which will minimize the risk of a painter falling; and which will afiord a firm grip to the user enabling the paintbrush to be held. steady by the extension handle during execution of a painting stroke.
Various other objects and advantages of the invention will hereinafter become more fully apparent from the following description of the drawing, illustrating a presently preferred embodiment thereof, and wherein:
Figure l is a fragmentary side elevational view showing the extension handle with a conventional paintbrush secured thereto;
Figure 2 is an enlarged sectional view taken substantially along a plane as indicated by the line 22 of Figure 1;
Figure 3 is an enlarged sectional view taken substantially along a plane as indicated by the line 3-3 of Figure l, and
Figure 4 is a cross sectional view through the grip portion of the extension handle.
Referring more specifically to the drawing, the extension handle, designated generally 6 and comprising the invention, includes an elongated handle member, designated generally 7, and a clamping unit, designated generally 8. The handle 7 may be formed of any suitable relatively lightweight material of suflicient rigidity, such as certain relativel lightweight woods or aluminum. The handle member 7 includes an elongated intermediate portion 9 which may be of various lengths and of various cross sectional shapes and which is preferably relatively slender as compared to the end portions 10 and 11 of the handle member 7. The end portion 10 constitutes the head or upper end of the handle member and is laterally enlarged and has substantially fiat opposite sides 10a and 10b which are disposed substantially parallel to one another. The head 10 has a bore or opening 12 extending therethrough which opens outwardly of said sides 10a and 10b and which is disposed in substantially a central position relative to the head. The other end 11 constitutes the handgrip of the extension handle 7 and is preferably widened somewhat relative to the intermediate portion 9 and likewise has substantially fiat opposite sides 11a and 11b which are disposed substantially parallel to the sides 10a and 10b. The handgrip 11 is also provided ice 2 away from the plane of the head 10 and is provided with,
an outwardly opening notch 19, as best seen in" Figure l. The clamp section 15 includes apart 20 forming a restricted, substantially coplanar integral extension of the other end of the plate 17 and which has an outturnedend portion forming a wall 21 which extends in a direction.
away from the head 10' and which is provided with an opening 22.
The other section 16 of the clamp 14 comprises an elongated metal bar or strip hich is longitudinally bowed and which strip 16 has restricted ends forming tongues 23 and 2 which are reversely curved relative to the intermediate portion of the strip 16. The plate portion 17 of the clamp section 15 has an opening 25 which. registers with the bore 12 and the strip 16 is provided with an opening 26 which is located more remote from the tongue 23 than from the tongue 24. The tongue 24 extends loosely through the opening 22 for connecting the clamp sections 15 and 16. Said clamp sections areadditionally connected by a long bolt 27 which. extends through the openings the clamp section 16 and which is spaced therefromby a washer 29 and a split spring 29 is disposed next to the bolt head 28 and the spring washer 30 is disposed between the washer 29 and the clamping section 16. A wing nut 31 engages the threaded opposite end of the bolt 27 and a washer 32 is disposed between said wing nut and the side 10b of the head 10.
When the extension handle 6 is not in use and the nut 31 is tightened, the tongue 23 will fit in the notch 19. By loosening the nut 31, the clamp section 16 can be swung away from the clamp section 15, said clamp section 16 pivoting relative to the clamp section 15 by engagement of its tongue 24 in the opening 22, so that its tongue 23 swings outwardly and away from the notch 19. In this manner, the portion of the clamp section 16 disposed between the tongue 23 and its opening 26 can be displaced sufficiently away from the plate 17 so that a portion of the handle 33 of a conventional paintbrush 34 can be inserted between said part of the clamp section 16 and the part of the plate 17, which is located between the opening 25 and its extended end 18, as illustrated in Figures 1 to 3. It will be noted that portions of the clamp section 16, located adjacent the opening 26 and adjacent the tongue 23, are disposed nearer the plate 17 than the part of the clamp section 16 which is disposed between said portions, so that the brush handle 33 will be confined immovably in the clamp 14 when the nut 31 is again tightened for drawing the clamp section 16 toward the clamp section 15. It will also be apparent that the clamp sections 15 and 16 as a unit are rotatably mounted on the bolt 27. Thus, before the nut 31 is tightened and after the brush handle 33 is in its position of Figures 1 to 3, said clamp sections may be rotated relative to the head 10, with the paintbrush 34, to position the axis of the paintbrush at any desired angle relative to the axis of the extension handle 7. By then tightening the nut 31 the brush handle 33 is clamped in the clamp 14 and at the same time said clamp is clamped immovably to the head 10 at the desired angle. Thus, by a single operation of tightening the nut 31 the paintbrush is not only secured to the extension handle but is located with its axis at a Patented May 21 1957."
26 and 25- and through the bore 12 g and which has a head 28: disposed on the outer side of washer 30; The washer desired angle relative to the axis of the extension handle for most convenient use. It will be apparent that the clamp 14 and the brush 34 are turnably adjustable about the bolt 27 in either direction as indicated by the arrows 35 and in a planeparallel to the plane of the head 10.
The grip portionll is grasped with either'hand, with An extension handle for paintbrushes comprising an.
elongated-slenderextension handle member having an enlarged end forming a head provided with substantially a pair of elongated clamp sections having substantially aligned openings, a bolt extending through said openings and through the head bore for swivelly mounting the clamp sections on one side of said head, a first one of said clamp sections having an elongated flat portion extending to adjacent the ends thereof and having a side disposed against one side of the head, said clamp section having an outturned end, spaced from the bolt receiving opening, forming a wall provided with an opening, the other end of said clamp section being extended outwardly and having a centrally disposed outwardly opening notch, said extended end portion being spaced a substantial distance from the bolt opening, and the flat portion, disposed between the bolt opening and said extended portion, forming the jaw of said first clamp section; said other second clamp section comprising an elongated strip said strip than the other tongue, said other tongue engaging in said notch in one position of the clamping unit, said strip including an elongated portion disposed between the bolt opening thereof and said other tongue and which is outwardly bowed relative to the fiat portion of said first clamp section, said other tongue forming a reversely curved extension of an outer end of said outwardly bowed portion and combining therewith to form the jaw of said second clamp section, said second clamp section pivoting about the. engagement of said first mentioned tongue thereof in the wall opening for swinging movement relative to the bolt toward and away from the first clamp section and being swingable outwardly to position the jaws in an open position to receive a part of a paintbrush handle therebetween, and a nut engaging said bolt for swinging the jaw of said second clamp section toward the jaw of the first clamp section when the nut is tightened to clamp the handle in said jaws and crosswise of theclamping unit, said clamping unit being clamped to the head by the tightening of the nut to position the axis of the brush handle at any desired angle to the axis ofthe extension handle member.
