Description

FAIL HOLDER Filed Aug. 27, 1930 Patented Apr. 12, 1932 i 1 REUEL s. RowE, or RUTILAND, vnmvroiv'r .PAIL HOLDER Application filed August 27, 1930. Serial No. 478,215.
This invention relates to a device for suspending paint pails from ladders. At present it is lcustomary for painters to stand on ladders in the course of their work with their paint pails attached to the rung of a ladder by means of a hook, attached to th'e lpail' handle. However this means of supporting a pail is found to be not only awkward and inconvenient because the center of the pail is beneath the ladder rung on which it is suspended and only one half of the pail is inside the rung, and toward the painter, and therefore the present invention has as its primary object to provide a more eflfective and more desirable means for supporting a paint pail from a ladder rung.
Another object of the invention is to provide a paint pail suspending attachment for a ladder which will be so construoted as to seswinging movement thereof while paint is being removed therefrom by the paintefis brush, or due to wind.
This invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, to be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and specifically pointed out in the appended claim, it being understood of course that minor changes may be made so long as they fall within the scope of the claim.
In describing my invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings, wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which:
F igure l is a view in elevation of the device applied to a paint pail, the device being illustrated as suspended from one rung of a ladder, which ladder is shown in section.
Figure 2 is a view in front elevation of the device.
Figure 3 is a view in side elevation of the device, partly in section. f
curely hold the pail and prevent any undue.
The device embodying the invention is made from two pieces of strap iron and the device comprises a member 1 which is formed from such material so as to provide a straight shank portion 2, ov'erturned at its upper end to provide a hook 3 of approximately semicircular form to engage over one rung of a ladder, from which rung the device and pail attached thereto are supported. The lower end of the shank 2 is deflected at an obtuse angle as indicated by the numeral 4: and this portion is formed with a threaded opening 5 and a screw 6 having a winged head 7 which is adjustably threaded through the opening.
The other member of the device is formed of a material referred to above, and comprises a shank portion 8 which is disposed against that side of the -shank portion 2 of'the member 1 from which the hook 3extends, and a member, last referred to, comprises, in addition to the shank portion 8, a clamp portion 9 which extends at an obtuse angle to the portion 8. Rivets 10 are secured through the shank portions 2 and 8 to the two members and serve to hold the same assembled with each other. As will be observed by reference to F igure 1, the device is tobe mounted .upon a ladder by engaging its hook 3 with a rung of the ladder and before the device is so engaged, the upper portion of the wall of the pail to be suspended is inserted between the portions 4 and 9 of the two members 1 and 8, and the screw 6 is then tightened so as to cause the inner end thereof to bind this por- 80 tion of the pailA against the clamping member 9.
From the foregoing description of the invention it will be seen that a pail is supported in the most effective manner and with the greatest degree of security, by the device embodying the invention, and in such position, with respect to the ladder, as to enable the painter to readily take up paint on his paint brush, from the pail.
What I elaim is:
A pail holder comprising a shank member having one end curved to form a hook and the opposite end portion thereof di'sposed at an angle to the intermediate portion of the shank, a set screw threaded through said angularly dispose'd porton, a second shank member attached at one end to the intermediate portion of the first mentioned shank member and having an angularly disposed clamp portion spaced from and parallel with the angularly disposed end portion of the first mentioned shan-k menffloer.V U
In testmony whereof I afix my signature.
