To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ARTHUR G. EMERY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Alliance, in the county of Stark and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bails for Paint-Buckets and the Like; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it ap pertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to devices pertaining to bails for paint buckets especially designed to support paint buckets from the rounds of a ladder while the painter is at work upon the ladder and using paint from the pail or bucket supported or suspended.

A further object of the invention is to provide means whereby the paint brush can be suspended and held within the bucket, or more specifically the brush proper can be held away from the bottom of the bucket and practically out of contact with the body of.

the paint contained in the paint bucket or the bristles of the brush can' be adjusted to or from the bottom of the bucket and held at the desired point of adjustment.

The nature of the invention maybe readily understood from the drawings forming part of this specification.

the inwardly compound hooked portions 3, the paint brush handle holding loops 4 and the integral connecting member 5. It is of importance, especially in paint buckets designed to be suspended from the rounds of ladders or other supports that the bail beso connected that there can be no possibility of the bail becoming detachedeither by the swinging movement of the bucket or the weight carried in the bucket. It is well understood that paint is quite heavy in propor; tion to its bulk and considerable strain comes upon the bail which is attached to the bucket. In order to prevent the bail from becoming detached from the bucket the attached ends of the bail are each provided with the compound hooked ends, which hooked ends are so formed that when placed in the ears 6 one of the compound curves or hooks will be located in the eyes 7 of the ears-6 and the opposite or other hook will be 'in the chamber of the ear 6.. by which arrangement there can be no possible danger of the bail becoming detached.

For thepurpose of providing means for suspending the bucket upon the round of a ladder or other support, the hook 8 is provided, which hook is provided at its base with the loops 9, the metal or wire is continued from the loops 9 at'an angle to the hook portion 8 and a short distance from the loops 9 there are formed the loops 10 from which loops the metal is extended a sufficient distance to provide what might be termed a brace or connection 11, said brace or connection being made up of the members of the wire bent to form the hook 8, the

9 and 10, said members being connected together by twisting one of the members extended and provided with the bucket connecting hook 12, said hook'being connected to the bucket 1 by inserting said hook through the aperture 13 formed in the top or upper portion of the bucket. The members 11 are formed of such a length as be tween the hook 12 and the loops 9 that they will hold the bail proper in an inclined position, said bail being inclined slightly toward the backof the bucket and is so inclined for the purpose of bringing the down pull of the bucket slightly back of the ears 6; by which arrangement the bucket 1 will be slightly inclined forward or toward the person using the bucket, thereby bringing the bucket'in better position for inserting and removing a paint brush.

For the purpose of providing adjustment for different sized handles, the bolt 14 is provided, which bolt is located through the loops 10 and is provided with the thumb nut 15, mounted upon the screw threaded portion of the bolt 14, the purpose of providing this adjustment is to adjust the handle holding loops from time to time so that paint brush handles of difierent size may be properly clam ed. It will be understood that the clamping action of the loops upon the paint brush handles is brought about by the spring action of the Wire going to make up the bail proper and hence it is necessary to adjust the loops to or from each other to provide the proper contact of the hoops upon the brush handles.

It is well understood that in painting buildings it is frequently necessary to carry two, three or more paint buckets up the ladder or ladders to be used at one time or placed in position for use as. for instance the body of the house is painted in one color and the gable may be painted another color and the trimming still another color, also a different color for the window sash. The different colors of paint may have to be used alternately and when no provision is made for holding the brushes, the workmen as a rule lay the brushes across the top of the bucket .or buckets, in which position the brush or I brushes are liable to be accidentally knocked OH from the bucket to the ground or into the paint and the paint adhering to the brush drips upon the outside of the buckets thereby causing annoyance, but by my peculiar device when a workman has taken paint from a bucket, containing a particular color and desires to change the color by using paint from another bucket, the brush is susended in the position shown in the drawings, in which positionv it is kept clean and not liable to he accidentally displaced and is easy of access when again wanted.

Having fully described my invention what wire consisting of I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- Y 1. In a device of the character described, the combination of a bucket, a bail connected to said bucket, said bail provided with integral spaced handle holding loops, a wire connected to said bail, said wire bent to form a suspending hook, loops located at the base of the suspended hook and the wire extended from the loops located at the base of the loop and connected to the bucket, substantially as and for the purpose specified.

2. In a device of the character described, the combination of a bail provided with handle holding loops, a bucket suspending wire consisting of hook and brace portions, loops located at the base of the hook portion and the bail extended through said loops, said brace portion extending rearward and connected to the bucket, substantially as and for the purpose specified.

3. In a device of the character described, the combination of a bail provided with handle holding loops, a bucket suspending hook and brace portions, loops located at the base of the hook portion and the bail extending through said loops, said brace portion extending rearward and connected to the bucket, and bolt receiving loops and a bolt located through said loops, substantially as and for the purpose specified.

4. In a device of the character described, the combination of a bucket, a bail secured to said bucket, said bail provided with handle holding loops, a bucket suspending wire consisting of hook and brace portions, loops adapted to receive the bail and a second set of loops, a bolt located through said second set of 100 s and eyelets located upon the bolt and In the second set of. loops, stantially as and for the purpose specific In testimony that I claim the above, I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
