Be it known that we, FREMONT P. STAN- N-ARD and WILLIAM D. STANNARD, citizens of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Firearms, of which the following is a full, clear, concise, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanyingdrawings, forming a part of this specification.

Our invention relates to firearms, and particularly to a detachable head or rib which may be used in conjunction therewith for sighting purposes.

It has heretofore been a common practice to provide double-barreled Shotguns with a rib placed above and between the two gunbarrels. This rib has been provided with a substantially straight upper surface and is of use in lining up or sighting a gun before shooting. A great number of singlebarreled firearms have been constructed in which no such rib has been provided, a small sight at the muzzle end of the'barrel being alone depended upon for lining-up the gun. It has been found by persons skilled in the art that it is much more diiiicult to properly sight a gun having a single barrel provided with a sight at the muzzle end thereof than it is to properly sight a gun provided with a rib similar to that now commonly employed with double-barreled Shotguns. It has been proposed to provide single-barreled Shotguns with a rib similar to that heretofore used on double-barreled guns, this rib being soldered or otherwise rigidly and permanently secured to the single gun-barrel; but such a rib, securely fastened throughout the length of the barrel of a gun, has been found to interfere materially with the shooting qualities of the gun.

Our invention contemplates the provision of a detachable rib which may be quickly and easily attached to the barrel of a firearm and which may be readily removed therefrom at will. The means for attaching such a detachable rib to the barrel of the gun may be made such as not to interfere with the shooting qualities of the gun.

Furthermore, there has been an immense number of firearms to which no such rib has been Xedly attached.

Our invention may be readily understood by reference to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 illustrates a well-known type of repeating shotgun and a detachable rib for application thereto. Fig. 2illustrates asimilar gun with a detachable rib in place thereon. Figs. 8, 4, and 5 illustrate details of the detachable rib shown in Figs. 1 and 2. Fig. 6 illustrates amodified form of means for detachably securing the rib to a gun-barrel, and Fig. 7 illustrates a modified construction of means and clamping means.

In Figs. 1 and 2 we have illustrated a repeating magazine-shotgun provided with a single barrel 10 and a cartridge-magazine 11, these parts being attached to the gun-frame at 12 and being held together by clampingarms 13 of a form well known to those skilled in the art. The gun is provided with the usual stock or butt 14, trigger 15, and guard 16. A grip 17 is provided for the purpose of actuating the feeding and ejecting mechanism and for cocking the hammer. While we shall particularly describe our invention as applied to such a gun, we do not wish to be limited to such a use thereof, as it will at once be apparent to those skilled in the art that our invention may be used in connection with a great variety of firearms.

In Figs. 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 we have illustrated a preferred form of rib constructed in accordance with our invention. The barrel 10 illustrated in the accompanying drawings is tapered from the butt to the muzzle end thereof, the taper being greatest toward the muzzle end of the barrel. The spring-clamp is adapted to fit snugly against the gun-frame at 12. As best illustrated in Fig. 3, a pair of ears 21 are secured to the rib in such a position as to be`engaged between the clamping-arms 13 and the-gun- The detachable rib is probarrel 10. As best illustrated in Fig. 4L, the rib 18 is provided near the muzzle end thereof with a short slot 22, through which passes a sight 23, having screw-threaded engagement with the gun-barrel at 24C and provided with a iange 25, adapted to engage the sides of the slot 22 to hold the rib in place on the gunbarrel. In applying such a rib to the gunbarrel the arms 2O 2O of the spring-clamp may be slipped about the barrel at or near the muzzle end thereof, Whereafter the rib is slipped backward along the gun-barrel until the arms 2O 2O come into engagement with the frame at l2. The disposition of the ears 2l is such as to bring them to a point on the gun barrel engaged by clampingarms 13, Whereafter the screw 26 may be tightened to clamp the ears tightly in place upon the gunbarrel. rIhe screw-threaded sight 23 may then be screwed in place, thus securing the rib firmly in position upon the gun-barrel. It will be apparent that the rib may be readily detached, if so desired. rIhe rib when thus secured in position upon the giin-barrel provides a means for sighting the gun which is equal to the rib now commonly employed in connection with double-barreled shotguns, to the barrels of which such ribs are now securely fastened. The expansion of the gimbarrel when fired is not affected by the use of a rib such as we have herein described nor are the shooting qualities of the gun in any Way affected by the use of such a detachable rib as We have herein shown.

In Fig. 6 We have illustrated a modified means of attachment for the rib, there being shown at the muzzle end of the rib a ring 27, adapted to fit about the muzzle end of the gunbarrel. At 28 there is a ring the position of which may desirably be made such that the ring will fall directly back of theclampingarms 13 when the rib is in position upon the gun-barrel. A small set-screw 30 may be placed in either or both of the rings 27 and 28, as shown in conjunction with the ring 27, for the purpose of holding the rib tightly in place on the gun-barrel. The ears 29 29 may be provided, these ears fitting partially about the gun-barrel to steady the rib in position thereon.

In Fig. 7 We have illustrated a modified form of rib which, as is clear from the drawings, may be constructed from a single piece of sheet metal. This form of rib is of particular advantage, in that it may be cheaply manufactured in large numbers by means of a stamping die and press. The ribBO in this instance may be fiat on top` with downwardlyprojecting side portions 31 81, the lower edges 32 of these side portions being formed to fit the upper surface of the gun-barrel. rIlie ears 33 may be integrally formed With the rib itself', and the spring clamping members 34 34 may be cut from the same sheet of material with the rib itself, Whereafter these acabas clamping members may be bent into a shape suitable for clamping engagement with the butt-end of the gun-barrel.

While We have herein shown and described a preferred embodiment of our invention and certain modifications thereof, it will be apparent to those skilled in the art that many other modifications may be employed without departing from the spirit of our invention. 1We do not, therefore, wish to limit ourselves to the precise disclosure herein set forth; but,

Having described our invention, we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentl. In combination, a repeating firearm having a single barrel anda magazine, clampingarms for holding said magazine and said barrel together, a detachable rib for said barrel, ears carried by said rib to be engaged by said clamping-ariiis.l and a springclamp at thc butt-end of said rib engaging said barrel to hold said rib in place thereon.

2. In combination, a magazine repeating shotgun having a single tapering barrel, a metal rib adapted to fit the upper side of said barrel and to present a substantially straight upper surface, a spring-clamp at the butt-end of said rib to engage the butt-end of said barrel to hold said rib in place thereon, a sight having screw-threaded engagement with the muzzle end of said barrel, a {iange on said sight engaging said rib to hold the same in place, a pair of retaining-ears on said rib, and clamping means having engagement with said barrel and with said ears to retain said rib in place on said gun-barrel.

In combination, a shotgun having a single barrel, a metal rib adapted to lit the upper side of said barrel and to present a substantially straight upper surface when in place on said barrel, a clamp at the butt-end of said rib to engage the butt-end of' said barrel to hold said rib in place thereon, said rib having a slot near the muzzle end thereof, a sight passing through said slot and having screwthreaded engagement ivith the muzzle end of said barrel, a flange on said sight to engage the sides of said slot to hold said rib in place, a pair of retaining-ears on said rib, and clamping means for engaging with said barrel and with said ears to retain said rib in place on said giii'i-barrel.

In combination, a shotgun having a s ingle barrel, a rib adapted to fit the upperside of said barrel and to present a substantially straight upper surface when in place on said barrel, clamping means at the butt-end of said rib for engaging the butt-end of said barrel to hold said rib in place thereon, a sight having screw-threaded engagement with the muzzle end of said barrel, and a flange on said sight for engaging said rib to hold the same in place.

6. In a rearm, the Combination with ak barrel and magazine thereof, of clamping-arms for holding said magazine and said barrel together, a detaeh able rib for said barrel extending along the entire length of the top thereof, a spring-clamp consisting of ears 2O at the butt-end of said rib for spring-engagement with said barrel, ears near the middle of said rib clamped against the barrel by said clamping-ears, a slot near the muzzle end of said rib, a sight extending through said slot and having threaded engagement with the muzzle end of said barrel, and a flange on said sight engaging the sides of said slot to hold said rib 1n place.

7. In combination,a firearm having' a barrel, a detachable rib for the barrel of said firearm extending along substantially the entire length o f the barrel, clamping means for securing the rib directly to the barrel at the butt-end, ears carried by said rib, and other clamping means adapted to engage said ears to hold said rib in place.

8. In combination, a firearm having a single barrel and a magazine, clamping-arms for holdlng said magazine and said barrel together, a detachable rib for said barrel, ears carried by said rib to be engaged between said clampingarms and said barrel, clamping means at the butt-end of said rib engaging said barrel to hold said rib in place thereon, and means for securing said rib to said barrel 'near the muzzle end thereof.

9. In combination, a firearm having asingle barrel and a magazine, clampingarms for holding said magazine and said barrel together, a

detachable rib for said barrel, ears carried by length thereof, spring-ears at the butt-end of said rib adapted for spring engagement with said barrel to hold said rib in place thereon, ears intermediary of the ends of said rib, clamping means adapted to engage said ears to hold the middle portion of the rib in engagement with the barrel, and means for fastening said ribs to said barrel near the muzzle end thereof.

In a firearm, the combination with the barrel thereof, of a detach able rib for said barrel extending along substantially the entire length thereof, spring-ears at the butt-end of said rib adapted for spring engagement with said barrel to hold said rib in place thereon, ears intermediary of the ends of said rib, clamping means adapted to engage said ears to hold the middle portion of the rib in engagement with the barrel, means for fastening said ribs to said barrel near the muzzle end thereof, and a sight associated with said rib near the muzzle end thereof.
