My invention relates to a certain device which is intended to be attached to guns or rifles for the purpose of afl'ording a rest to the cheek of a person in the act of firing, being especially applicable to that class of arms used for long-range shooting, and which have a raised sight. My improved cheek-rest is attached to the stock of a gun or rifle and it is made with two vertical arms or shanks arranged in slots in the gun-stock, and combined with a set-screw, which passes through the gun-stock and bears against one of the arms or shanks for holding the cheek-rest in near or upon the stock when not in use, so as to occupy the least possible space. For the purpose of holding-the cheek-rest in position, I make use of set-screws f, which are passed through the stock at the point of the socket e e.
The part of the rest that comes in immediate contact with the cheek of the persou'is, preferably, provided with a cushion, g, of india-rubber or other soft material, which is ap plied in the manner shown in Fig. 3.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is n The cheek-rest B, having the vertical arms 'or shanks (1 arranged in slots 0 e in the gunstock, in combination with a set-screw, f, for holding the cheek-rest in its adjusted position, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand and seal this 19th day of April, 1876.
