Description

F. WESSON.
Pistol and Dirk Knife.
Patented JulyQO, 1869* WiTnesse-S:

FRANKLIN WESSON, OF WORCESTER, MASSACHUSETTS.
Letters Patent No. 92,918, dated July 20, 1869.
IMPROVED COMBINED PISTOL AND DIRK.
5|.he Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
-1istol and Dirk-Knife; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specificaltion, and in which- Figure 1 represents a side view of acombined pis- 1301- and dirk-knife constructed according to my invention;
Figure 2 represents a horizontal section of the barrel of the same; and
Figure 3, a transverse section, taken in thc-linexx, fig. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
This invention consists in the arrangement of a dirkknife to slide into and out of a sheath constructed between the bores of a two or more shot revolver, whereby an efiicient weapon is produced.
Referring to the accompanying drawings- A is the barrel ofa double-shot revolving pistol. of
. the ordinary construction, except that sufficient space is left between its bores fora cylindrical sheath or socket, B.
Said cylindrical sheath or socket B is arrz'u'iged between and parallel with the bores of the barrel A, and is designed for reception of a sliding dirk-knife O.
. Said dirk-knife is provided, at its hilt, with a cylindrically-formcd shoulder-block, 0', which is fitted so as to slide back and forth withinthc said sheath or socket B.
In one of the sides of this sheath or socket is formed a longitudinal slot, 71, through which projects a springcatch, 0, of the said shoulder-block.
Said spring-catch c is preferably of a form-as represented in fig. 2 of the drawing, but may be of any other form for effecting the purpose for which it is intended. It is pivoted within a slot formed in the said shoulder-block O, andis actuated in an outward di-' rection by a spring, s, arranged under it.
Said catch 0 is provided with rectangularly-extending studs or locking-projections c c, which, by the out ward springing of the catch 0, when the dirk is forced outward to its utmost extent, look into recesses 'i 'i,
formed in each side of the forward extremity of the slot b,-thereby preventing the backward sliding of the same by the said locking of the parts.
The said dirk maybe slid forward by a sliding pressure of the thumb upon the spring-catch 0, until the hook or point of said catch reaches the end of the slot, or it may be extended suddenly by centrifugal force, it being stopped at the same point and by the same means as just described. s.
The dirk-knife C may be returned to its sheath at pleasure by any suitable backward force, by first pressing upon the said catch 0 until its locking-projections e c are disengaged from the recesses of the slot 7).
What I claim as my invention, and desire to have secured by Letters Patent, is-- lhe combination of a dirk-knife, provided'with a spring-catch, c, with a two or more barrel revolver, and arranged within a central sheath, substantially as described.
FRANKLIN WESSON.
