EDGAR G. TRIBBY, OF KANSAS, ILLINOIS.
HOG-RINGER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 30, 1910.
Application filed May 15, 1909. Serial No. 496,234.
T 0 all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDGAR C. TRIBBY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kansas, in the county of Edgar and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Hog-Ringer; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention pertains to a new and useful ringer, whereby rings may be easily and quickly inserted in noses of animals, and the invention in its broadest aspect has for its main object the provision of means whereby the pivoted jaws are limited during their closing action, said means comprising various members havingprojections of various sizes, in order to limit the closing action of said jaws.
A further object is to provide means whereby the said members may be adjusted, to suit the various requirements.
The features and elements and the arrangement thereof, for accomplishing the objects of this device or apparatus, may be changed and varied, that is to say, in an actual reduction to practice, the understand ing, however, is that the changes and variations accruing from said reduction to practice are comprehended by the appended claims.
To obtain a full and correct understanding of the details of construction, combinations of features, elements and advantages, reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings in connection therewith, wherein- Figure l is a perspective view of the device, showing a ring placed between the biting jaws of the device, and in readiness to be closed. Fig. 2 is a sectional view through the device. Fig. 3 is a perspective view showing the Various members used in limiting the said jaws in their movements. Fig. 4 is a detail transverse sectional View of one of the handles, showing the adjustable stop.
In regard to the annexed illustrations, 1 and 2 designate pivoted members having the usual pivot pin 3. The shorter ends of said members form the jaws 4, between which the ring 5 is positioned, in order that when the adjacent ends of the ring are placed on either side of the nose of the animal, the same may be easily and quickly closed, thereby inserting the adjacent ends of the ring through the nose of the animal.
In order to limit the movement of the jaws, the handle 6 of one of said members is provided with a recess 7 the side walls of which are beveled or under-cut in which one of the various slides or members shown in Fig. 3 is positioned. These slides or members are denoted by the numeral 8, and are provided with slots 9, through which the threaded shank 10 of the thumb bolt 11 extends and with beveled edges adapted to engage the beveled walls of the recess 7 whereby the slides will be held in locked position in the recess. The threaded shank engages the threads of the recess 12 of the said handle 6, and between the head of the thumb bolt and the slide or member, a suit able washer 13 is positioned. By manipulating this thumb bolt or screw in one direction or the other, the slide or member may be adjusted, in order to position the lug 14 of the slide, insuch wise as to properly limit the movement of the handle 15 of one of the jaws 4. Each one of the slides, as shown in 3, is provided with a lug 14, and the lugs of the various slides vary in length, and by their employment the movement of the jaws may be increased or decreased.
From the foregoing, the essential features, elements and the operation of the device, together with the simplicity thereof, will be clearly apparent.
Having thus fully described the invention, what is claimed as new and useful is 1. A hog ringer comprising two pivoted members, each member having a ring holding jaw, one of said members being formed with a longitudinally disposed recess having beveled walls, a slide having a lug stop at one end thereof and a body slot, and beveled sides to fit the beveled walls of the recess, disposed in the recess, and a screw extending through the slot in the slide adapted to hold the slide in fixed position in the recess.
2. A hog ringer comprising two pivoted members, each member having a ring holding jaw, one of said members being formed with a longitudinally disposed open-ended recess having beveled walls, in combination with a slide having a lug stop at one end In testimony whereof I have signed my thereof and a slotted body, and beveled name to this specification in the presence of sides to fit the beveled Walls of the recess, two subscribing Witnesses.
