WITNESSES 4 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FRANK F. LEWIS, OF J'ANESVILLE, WISCONSIN, ASSIGNOR TO LEWIS KNITTING COM- PANY, OF JANESVILLE, WISCONSIN.
IBIFURCATED GARMENT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 28, 1909.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK F. LEWIS, of Janesville, in the county of Rock and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bifurcated Garments; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to an improvement in bifurcated garments such as union suits, drawers and equestrian tights or similar garments designed for wear about the lower portion of the trunk, legs and thighs.
The object of the invention is to provide a garment of the class described with a drop or falling seat portion so constructed and combined with the body portion as to.form a neat, durable and comfortable article of Wear.
With this object in view my improvement consists in certain features of construction, and relative arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter described and pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a view in rear elevation of an undergarment embodying my improvement. Fig. 2 is a detached view of the pieces from which the drop seat is made, and Fig. 3 is a detached view of the piece or gusset inserted in the crotch of the garment.
1 represents the main or body portion of the garment which may be made from tubularknitted web fabric in the usual manner and of any desired material. The back of the garment is cut on the lines 2, 3, which leaves the back 4 formed of a continuous piece of material extending from the shoulders downward to a point at or near the crotch. The transverse cut may be Varied in length, but in practice it. is made of such length as will insure an opening of the de-' sired size for the purpose for which it is evidently intended. To the lower portion of the garment at the lines 5, 6, are secured the pieces 7, and 8, a detached view of which is illustrated in Fig. 2. The broad ends 9, 9,
of these pieces are secured on the lines 5, 6, while the edges 10 of these pieces are secured together, while a suitable transverse reinforcing strip of fabric 11 is preferably attached to their upper ends. Button holes 12 are formed in the upper end of the drop seat as thus constructed for engagement with buttons 13 attached to the back of the garment, or any other means for detachably securing the drop seat in place may be employed. The crotch gusset 14, illustrated in Fig. 3, is inserted at the fork of the leg portions, and the converging edges of the dropseat sections 7 and 8. By making the drop seat and the seat gusset of the form and uniting them in the manner shown and described it insures a fullness to the seat portion of the garment, which will cause it to conform to the natural shape of the body of the wearer and obviate any undue stress or strain on the garment. By extending the body portion of the garment downwardly to the crotch or nearly thereto, it insures complete protection of the kidneys and affords a most comfortable and serviceable garment.
Havingfully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is,
A bifurcated garment having a straight transverse cut adjacent to the crotch, two flaring drop seat sections secured at their lower ends on diagonal lines to the garment and having vertical inner meeting edges secured together above the crotch of the garment, and a crotch gusset secured to the inner edges of the flaring sections below the vertical meeting edges thereof and between the leg members of the garment.
In testimony whereof, I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
FRANK F. LEWIS. Witnesses:
ALEXANDER E. MaTHnsoN, JOHN M. WHI'JEHEAD.
