Description

(Np Model.) Y
S. C. FERRISS. Pants.
No 2375004' Pat'ented Jan. 2-5,188| "n u f//ilzamlmwimn Iii/;
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
STEPHEN C.CFERRISS, OF NEW MILFORD, CONNECTICUT.
PANTS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 237,004, dated January 25, 1881.
Application ined May 31, 1880. (No maden.
i To all whom it may concern Y Be it known that I, STEPHEN C. FERRIss,
l of New Milford, in the county of Litchfield and State iii.' Connecticut, have invented a certain Anew and useful Improvement in Overalls,
Pants, and Drawers, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to so construct overalls, pants, or drawers that at the part which is subjected to the greatest strainnamely, the seat-the strains either lengthwise or transversely will come upon the bias of the cloth, thus permitting the required amount of stretching and conducin g tothe comfort of the wearer'.
To Q fjs end" my invention consists in apair of overalls, pants, or drawers in which -the warp and weft in the'portion forming the legs run vertically and laterally in the usual manner, while in. the seat, which is composed of separate pieces, the warp or weft run diagonally, so that a lateral or vertical strain exerts itself upon the bias and is relieved by the yield ingv of the cloth. The portions of the scat are preferably joined to the legs by diagonal seams, so that the strain upon the part ofthe leg immediately below the seam is ou the bias,
while the strain lengthwise and crosswise of still lower parts of the'leg is straight. The pieces of cloth which form the seat are also so cut that the seams at the side and center and top and bottom of theseat-piece are all cut on the bias.
The accompanying drawing represents a rear perspective view of a portion of a pair of pants embodying my invention, in which the directions of .the warp and weft threads are indicated by the stripes of the pattern upon the goods.
A designates the legs of the-pants; B B, the two pieces which form the subject of my invention and constitute the seat of the pants. These pieces areunited along their top edges to a waistband, C, are united together along a centralseam,-b, and are united to the leg portions by side seams, c, and bottom seams, d.
It will be observed that inasmuch as the warp and weft threads run lengthwise of and across the legs there is no possibility of stretching by strains in either of these directions. The warp and weft threads of the seat portion run diagonally to the threads of the leg portions, and therefore a strain incurred in bending over, for instance, or a lateral strain, will strain the cloth on the bias, and therefore cause it to stretch without weakening or injuriously straining the cloth.
It will be observed that the diagonal seams or bottom seams between the seat-pieces B and legs A bring the strain upon part of the leg below the seam onvthe bias, and are therefore more advantageous than a seam straight across would be. The side, center, top, and
-bottom edges of the seat-pieces B B, also being all out on the bias, prevents any strains from coming upon the warp and weft threads in the direction of their length.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. A pair of pants, overalls, or drawers in which the warp and weft in the portion forming the legs run vertically and laterally, while in the seat, which is composed of separate pieces, the warp and weft threads run diagonally to the threads in the legs, substantially as specified.
2. A pair of pants, overalls, or drawers in which the warp and weft of the portion forming the legs run vertically and laterally, while in the seat, which is composed of separate pieces united to the leg portion by diagonal seams, the warp and weft threads run diagonally to the threads in the legs, substantially as specified.
3. A pair of pants, overalls, or drawers in which the seat is composed of two separate pieces united to the leg portions by diagonal seams and cut bias upon the top, side, and center seams, as well as upon the bottom seams, substantially as specified.
STEPHEN C. FERBISS.
