To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FREDERICK BOGEN- BERGER, a citizen of the United States, residing at h Iilwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gravity Sash-Locks of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates particularly to a class of gravity actuated sash locks which are used in connection with fire proof windows, or windows of sheet metal construction, having sash which swing on pivots and which are designed to close automatically.
The object of my invention is to provide a lock for this purpose, which is so constructed that its parts can be easily and cheaply manufactured, and quickly assembled.
My invention is further arranged to be fitted and adjusted to each individual window with a minimum of labor and trouble.
My invention also aims to provide a lock which is perfect and responsive in its action.
On August 24, 1908, I filed an application, Serial No. 450,057, for Letters Patent on improvements in gravity sash locks. This invention or-lock is to' be used on the upper rail of the window sash. My present invention is to be used in connection with this g ally in case of fire.

With these and other objects in view, my invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be described and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1, represents a face view of my invention and portions of the frame and sash to which it is attached. Fig. 2, is a side view of my invention, showing a cross section of the sash bar and frame to which it is attached. Fig. 3, is a templet view of the support which carries the pawl or looking member. Fig. 1, is a vertical section of a window frame and sash with my present invention attached, and illustrating its operation.
In the embodiment illustrated my invention comprises, a pawl 1, pivotally carried by the supporting arch 2, which is fastened to the sash rail 3, and a strike plate 4L, fastened to the sill or cross bar of the window frame, 5. The pawl 1, is a heavy compact body of a uniform breadth, having a head or weighted portion 6, the under side of which is cut to form the hook 7. This head swings on the pivots 6, unites with the body portion 8, through which is a hole, in which the pivot. pin 9, is inserted. The supporting arch 2, of which Fig. 3, is a templet view is made of sheet steel or other suitable metal, and bent so as to form two fastening flanges 10, two supporting flanges 11, and a connecting arch 12. Two stove bolts 13, fasten this supporting arch to a reinforcing plate of heavy metal 1 1, which is in turn fastened to the inside of the sash rail 3, which is of relatively light iron. The supporting flanges 11, have holes 15, provided through which the pivot pin 9, passes and over which said pin is riveted. The strike plate 4c, is of heavy metal bent so as to form a striking edge or stop 16, which engages the hook 7, and a flat fastening portion 17. This fiat fastening portion is provided with two oblong slots, 18, through which the two bolts 19, pass and fasten in screw engagement with the reinforcing plate 20, fastened to the inside of the sill 5. Another hole which is threaded is provided, and in which the set screw 21, is placed.
As has been mentioned already, it is intended that my invention be used in connection with a gravity sash lock placed on the upper rail of the sash. This arrangement provides that the sash shall close automatic- In Fig. 4:, we have a 22, having a sash 23, which 24. My invention is fastened to the lower sash rail 3, and sill 5.
The operation of these locks is secured as follows: On the upper side of the head 6, is an eyelet, 25, through which the chain 26, is fastened. From here the chain is passed up through the pulley 27, of the upper look 28, and then down again. Now it will be seen that when a pull is exerted on the chain at 29, both lower and upper locks will disengage from their respective strike plates, thus unlocking the sash and at the same time allowing it to open. Whenever the chain 26, is loosened the sash will close automatically, and the locks will catch of their own accord. In case of fire the chain is separated at the fusible link 30.
The pawl 1, is limited in its movement so that its action should be quick and positive. The upward movement is limited when the head 6, strikes the connecting arch 12, at its edge 31. The downward movement is limited when under side of the connecting arch 12.

the tail 32, of the pawl 1, strikes the in the action of my invention is secured in the following way: The strike plate 4, has the oblong slots 18, through which the holding bolts 19, pass. Before these bolts are tightened the strike plate 4, is moved up or down as desired,- thus keeping the strike plate at the required height; Adjustment in and out is secured by tightening or loosening the set screw 21. This set screw is a valuable part of my invention as it secures an obj ect that has not been obtained hitherto.
From the foregoing description it will be seen that the action of my invention is positive and that it secures all the advantages sought in the foregoing objects.
While the description has shown my lock used in connection with a window of hollow sheet metal construction, it is to be understood that it can be used 011 windows made ofwood or other materials should occasion arise.

In a gravity sash lock of the character described, the combination of a pivoted pawl, a supporting arch adapted to carry said pawl, a strike plate comprising a piece of heavy bent metal, one end adapted for engagement with said pawl, the other being a fiat fastening body, said body portion being provided with two oblong slots, and a threaded aperture, holding bolts passing through said oblong slots, and a set screw adapted to work in said threaded aperture.
