Description

@aan onm- Ctnted gratta JOSEPH @.cURRYER'AND WILLIAM c. YOUNG, OFTHORNTOWN,
INDIANA. I
Letters Patent No. 92,280, dated July 6, 1869.
IIVIPRVEMZBNT IN DOOR-LATCHES.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the lame.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, Josera C. GURRYEB and WILLIAM C. YOUNG, of Thorntown, in the county of Boone, and State of Indiana, have invented a new'and valuable Improvement `in Latch-Fastenings; and we do hereby declare that the followingl is a fnll,'clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1, of the drawings, is a plan View of our device, and
`Figures 2 and 3 arey details.
Our invention has relation'to latches for doors and gates; and
It consists mainly vin the arrangement of double catches, lone of which is loose, and the other stationary, with a swinging guard or lock, all adjusted in such manner that the double catches are adapted to doors opening either to the right or lett, and the latch in either case held firmly.
The letter a-of the drawings represents a plate of metal, adapted for fastening to the door-jamb, by means of screws b.
The letter c is a catch, firmly attached to the plate a, and letter d is the latch.
The letter s is a slot, cut in the plate, and extendingdownward to a point immediately opposite the upper end of the latch, when in its place.
In the'slot s,-I adjust the catch u, in such manner that said catchmay be moved upward or downward at will, the lower end of said catch being turned outward to the right and left, ony the lower'side of the plate, in such manner that thecatch shall be held` in the slot securely, and at the same time be allowed to slide up and down.
and is swung back and forth, like the pendulum of a clock. c
Our device is operated as follows:
The plate a is attached to the jamb of the door, and the latch on the 'door itself', or they may be reversed, and the latchplaced upon the jamb. y
To close the door and fasten it, we raise the catch u, and allow the latch to fall into its place in catch c. We then let go the catch u, which falls down, forming a shoulder over the latch, while the guard v swings to a perpendicular position, with its elbow resting upon the upper side of catch a, and thereby locking the latchsecurely.
The foregoing represents the operation of our device, when applied to a door opening towards the right. When placed upon a door opening to the left, the catch a is moved upward, instead cf downward, and the guard adj usted in its place underl the same.
When the door is to be' unfastened, the catch u is raised or lowered, as the case may require, and the velbow of the guard placed under the catch u, to hold witnesses. Y
JOSEPH C. CURRYER. WILLIAM G. YOUNG. Witnesses:
ABNER V. AUSTIN, PERRY FELTON.
