Description

` J. L. SMITH.
Gate.
No.243,31s. l Patente-d1une 21,1881.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES L. SMITH, OF PRINCETON, INDIANA.
GATE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 243,318, dated June 21,\1881. Application filed April 21, 1881. (Model.)
To all whom 'it may concern Be it Vknown that I, JAMES L. SMITH, of Princeton, in the county of Gibson, and in the State of Indiana, have invented certain new lss and useful Improvements in Grate-Hinges and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters ot'reference marked thereon, making a part of this specilication.
This invention relates to certain improvements in gates 5 and it has for its objects to provide a simple and efticient means whereby the gate may be operated and raised and kept at any desired height in case of snow-drifts, or when it is desired to permit small stock to pass freely under the gate to separate the samefrom larger stock. These objects I attain bythe apparatus illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figurel represents a perspective of my improved gate; Fig. 2, au end elevation thereof, showing the means of hanging it on the gatepost; and Fig. 3 a detached perspective View of the improved hinge by which the gate is hung to the post.
The letter A indicates the post which snp- -ports the gate, which is provided with a cylindrical extension, a, at its upper end, and which is secured at its lower end in the ground in the usual manner.
rJhe letter B indicates a thimble-hin ge, which is adapted to lit upon the cylindrical portion of the gate-post and turn thereon, rest-ing normally upon the shoulder at the juncture of the cylindrical and lower portion of said post. The said hinge at its lower edge is inclined, as shown at b, and the upper edge of the shoulder of the post is similarly inclined, but in the opposite direction, so-that the weight of the gate will cause the hinge to rotate andl close the gate automatically when opened. The said hinge has a slotted extension, c, at one side, and in said slot is located a friction-wheel, d, upon which -the upper railot' the gate C is adapted to rest and slide. The cylindrical part of the gate-post at desired intervals is pro vided with apertures d, and a pin, e, adapted to be inserted in such apertures, by means ot' which the hinge, and with it the gate, can be elevated to any desired height.
The letter D indicates a hook attached to the gate, which bears against the gate-post A and holds the lower part of the gate to the said ost. p E indicates a frictioI-l-roller, upon which the lower part of the rail is adapted to travel as the gate' slides back and forth.
The post F, which supports the free end of the gate when closed, is provided with a series of seats, G, for the latch H, so that the gate may be held in position corresponding to theV elevation of the hinge when it is closed.
The letter I indicates a stop for holding the gate below when closed.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination, with the cylindrical portion ofthe fence-post, ot' the adjustable hinge provided with a friction-roller, upon which the gate is adapted to be supported and to slide, substantially as specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 13th day of April, 1881.
