UNITED ST TES PATENT ()FFICE.
LEVI D. MEOKLEY, OF GLENVILLE, PENNSYLVANIA.
GATE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 272,739, dated February 20, 1883.
Application filed December 8, 1882.
T all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LEVI D. MEOKLEY, of Glenville, in the county of York and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and usefullmprovements in Gates; and Ido hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved gate, and Figs. 2 and 3 are detail views of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
My invention has relation to swinging gates; and it consists in the improved construction and combination of the same, as hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In the accompanyingdrawings, thelettersA and B indicate the posts between which the gate is hun The post A is provided with pintles, upon which the eyes 0 turn, which are fastened upon the inner stake,-D, of the gate, to which the upper bars, E, and the brace-bar F are rigidly fastened, the brace F being fastened at its outer end to the outer ends of bars E. The lower bars, G, are hinged to the lower end of the stake D, and the rest of the stakes H are hinged between the lower bars, G, upon bolts 1, while their upper ends slide between the top bars, E, having blocks Jinterposed between them. Upon one of the top bars is pivoted a lever, K, to one end of which is hinged a hooked arm, L, which hooks into a hole, M, in the lower bar. To the other arm of lever K, and near to the fulcrum, is hinged anotherarm, N, which is hinged to alatch, 0, which engages a hole, P, in the post B. This post B is, furthermore, provided with a turnbutton, Q, and a recessed block, R, in which the lower end of the outer stake rests when the gate is closed. The outer stake, S, of the gate has two slots, T and U, into which apin,
(No model.)
V, which is chained to the gate, fits. A curved spring, W, serves to hold the free end of lever K when it is tilted back, withdrawing the latch.
To open the gate, the lever K is tilted back in both directions, or only in one it itis turned forward.
The gate may be locked by inserting thepin V through the upper slot, '1, andsecuring it there with a padlock, while when not in use the pin is inserted through slot U.
If it is desired to raise the outer end of the gate from the ground to allow small animals to pass through while excluding larger ones, the arm L is uuhooked and the lower bars raised till pin V may be inserted in slot U above the top bar. By this construction I obtain a strong, durable, and simple gate, which rests, when closed, as much upon the outer end as upon the hinges, and which may be easily opened and closed from the ground as well as from horse back.
Having thusdescribed myinvention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States- In a swinging gate, the combination of the hinged inner stake, 1), upper bars, E, lower bars, G, brace F, stakes H, lever K, hooked arm L, arm N, latch O, outer slotted stake, S, pin V, spring YV,'recessed block It, and post B, having latch-hole P and turn-button Q, all constructedand com biued substantially as and for the purpose shown'and set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereunto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
LEVI D. M EOKLEY.
