- My invention relates to a novel construction of a latch for gates; and it consists in the employment of a vertical rod attached to the gate-post, so that by means of handles upon each side it can be caused to partially rotate either way upon its axis. Arms project from this shaft at top and bottom, and to these arms are attached the latches which slide in guides and secure the gate, a spring serving to retain them in place.

HENRY JONES, OF SHASTA, CALIFORNIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN GATE-LATCHES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 176,316, dated April 18, 1876; application filed March 13, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY J ONES, of Shasta, Shasta county, State of California, haveinvented aDouble-BoltGate-Fastener; and I do hereby deelare the following description and accompanying drawings are sufficient to enable any person skilled in the art or science to which it most nearly appertains to make and use my said invention Without further invention or experiment.
My invention relates to a novel construction of a latch for gates; and it consists in the employment of a vertical rod attached to the gate-post, so that by means of handles upon each side it can be caused to partially rotate either way upon its axis. Arms project from this shaft at top and bottom, and to these arms are attached the latches which slide in guides and secure the gate, a spring serving to retain them in place.
Referring to the accompanying drawings for a more complete explanation of my invention, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my gate.
A A are the posts of a gate, B, to which it is hinged, and swings between them. To the outside of the post A are secured two supporting sockets, c c, and a vertical shaft, D, turns between these sockets or bearings. Two arms, E and F, project horizontally from this vertical shaft, one near the top and the other near the bottom, so as to extend through from one side to the other of the gate, or from the shaft to that side upon which the gate swings. To the ends of these arms are pivoted or hinged two latches, G H. These latches slide through guides I, so that when the shaft D is turned in one direction the latches will slide past the edge of the gate, and thus securely lock it at top and bottom; but when turned in the opposite direction the latches can be withdrawn, so as to allow the gate to be opened.
A spring, J, or other equivalent device may be attached to the gatepost, and, by pressing upon the arm E, it will hold the latches in position to keep the gate closed.
In order to operate the gate from either side with facility the arm E may have a handle, K, attached to each end, or one may be attached to the latch upon one side, if preferred, so that it will only be necessary to operate the latches by means of the handle upon the side on which the gate is approached.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The vertically supported rotating shaft D, with its arms E and F, and spring J, in combination with one or more sliding latches, G H, guided and operated so as to confine or release the gate, substantially as herein described.
2. The vertical rotating shaft D, With its arms E F, so constructed as to operate the latches G H, and provided with the operatinghandles K at either side of the gate, substantially as herein described.
