Description
(No Model B', p, HARRELL.
' ATTORNEYS,
Aglllfllllllll I-III UNITED STATES PATENT @trice BENJAMIN F. HARRELL, OF NEVQT MARION, INDIANA.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters atent No. 300,603, dated June 17, 1884.
Application filed August Q9, 1883.' (No model.)
To all when@ Hwy concern:
Be it known that I, BENJAMIN F. HARRELL, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New Marion, in the county of Ripley and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gates, and I do hereby declare th at the :following is a full, clear,
and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form apart of this specification, and in which- Figure l is a side elevation of my improved gate. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the gate in its adjusted position to take up sagging. Fig. 3 is a top View of part ofthe gate, showing it partly open. Fig. 4 is a detail view, on an enlarged scale, of the latch; and Fig. 5 is a cross-section of the saine through line .fc .r in. Fig. 4.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
My invention has relation to swinging gates; and it consists in the construction and combination of parts of the gate whereby it can be easily adjusted in a moment of time to take up sagging of its outer end, substantially as hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, A is .the hinge -post, and B the latch post, between which the gate C is hung. The gate,at its hinged end, has an inclined heel, D, with a strap-hinge, 1-, at its lower end, and a rod, F, inserted horizontally through its upper end, and bent at its outer end to form an arm. G, which is hinged upon the pintle H, so that the gate may front with posts A and B and swing at least half a circle.
Upon the inner end of rod F, which projects into the gate, is hinged a yoke or stirrup, I, adapted to engage a raek-bar, J, fastened upon the under side of one of the gate-rails.
Ii is the gate-latch, and L the latchplate,
, through which the latch-bolt M is inserted,
and plate Lhas a semicircular slot, N, through which a bolt or pin may be inserted to prevent the latch from being turned too far back. As the latch is turned to lock the .gate it will rest upon the shoulder a on the latch-plate, and by the construction and combination of parts as shown it will be seen that rit may be used either with a ri ght-hand or left-hand gate, and that it can readily be opened from either side of the gate.
It will also be seen that there are no springs or complicated parts to become rusty and useless by eXposure to the weather, but that the latch, being so simple init-s construction, is reliable at all times.
From the 'foregoing description, taken in connection with the drawings, the operation of my improved gate will readily be understood. The inclined heel enables the gate to be adjusted properly, so as not to bind against the ground in opening or shutting in case of sagging of the outer end of the gate caused by settling of the hinge-post or from other causes. The pivoted yoke I at the outer end of rod F can easily be. adjusted to its proper notch in the rack-bar J by simply lifting the outer end ofthe gate up a little, and may be adjusted from time to time, as occasion requires.
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United Statesl. The combination of the hinge-post A, having pintle H, gate C, having slanting or inclined heel D, hinge E, and rack bar J, hinge-rod F G, and hinged yoke or stirrup I,
substantially as and `for the purpose shown and set forth. v
2. The combination of the hinge -post A, having pintle H, gate G, having slanting or inclined heel D, hinge E, and rack bar J, hinge-rod F G, having the hinged yoke or stirrup I, and latch-post B, having the drop-latch K, the whole constructed and combined to operate substantially as and for the purpose shown and set forth.
InV testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereunto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
BENJABIIIN F. HARRELL.
