Leners Paten N0.`92,o47, 'dated June 2o, 1869.
IMPROVEMENT IN DOOR-LATCHS.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the lame.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, C. F. HERRTCK, of Independence,
A in the county of Buchanan, and'in the State of Iowa,
have invented certain new and. useful Improvements in Latch for Doors, Blinds, 85e.; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact'description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction of a latch for doors, blinds, 85e., and in the. arrangement of certain devices hereinafter set forth and described.
Fignre l is a perspective of each of the parts.
Figure 2 is a section view of the part attached to the window or door-frame, showing its internal construction.
Figure 3 is a view of the slotted plate, by means of which the bolt is adjusted.
LetterA, the part'whch is secured to the door or blind, by means of the screws, which pass through the openings in its side, and by the screw upon the bottom of the knob B.
Extending through a slot vin the side of the doorplate A, is the bolt C, by means of which the door or blind is held, after it has been shut.
This bolt is attached to a-flat metal plate, d, running perpendicular to the edge of the door or blind, and has a slot cut in each end, so that the bolt can be raised or lowered, so as to be adjusted to the sinking or falling ofthe door. l
Should the door or blind sink in the least, it will be found that there is trouble in making the bolt catch; so, instead of having to raise the whole doorplate, the two screws only need be loosened, and then the bolt can be raised up or down in its slot, so as to accommodate itself, and then tightened again.
Sunk into the door-frame is the lock-frame E, in which the bolt C is caught and held.
Attached to the outside of this frame, there is placed the latch F, which can be moved freely up and down so as to catch or loosen the bolt.
This latch has a deep slot cut in its side, so as to pass over the frame E, by which it is retained in position.
Attached to it, inside of the frame, as seen in Iig. 2, there is au arm, G, extending across the frame, thev end of which is turned or bent upward.
Upon the top ot' this arm there. is placed a coiled spring,.H, which forces the latch back, after it has been raised, so as to release the bolt C.
Inside of the frame there is placed a lever, I, which has a slot cut in its side, so as to catch the end of the arm G, when raised.
'lhe shell or case which encloses the spring, arm, and lever, is partly open at the top,'so that when the arm raises the spring upward, the end of the lever can give upwards, tilting the lowex` end forward, as seen in part of tig. 1. l
As the latch is raised, the end of the arm catches in the slot iii the lever, andis held there until the door or blind is closed, when the bolt C strikes the end of the lever, causing it to release the latch, when it falls aga-in.
Should the latch fall before the door is closed, the striking of the bolt will raise it high enough to let it slip under, when .it immediately closes again.
Having thus described my invention,
What I claim, and lesire to secure by Letters Patent,`is-
' 1. The slotted lever I, when so arranged as to tilt forward and catch the arm G of the latch F, in the manner and for the purpose described. l 2. The arrangement of the latch F, provided with the arm G, lever I, bolt C, slotted plate d, and doorplate A, when all are combined in the manner and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing, I have here# unto set my hand, this 20th day of April, 1-869.
. O. F. HERRIOK.
Witnesses:
