Description
UNITED STAT-Es PATENT OEEIGE.
/VILLIAM MCKEE'AND CHARLES H. JORDAN, OF VASHINGTON CITY, l DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN BLIND-HINGE.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, WILLIAM IIICKEE and C. H. JORDAN, of the city of ldlasliingtoli, District of Columbia, have invented an Improved Shutter-Fastener; and we do hereby declare the following to be an exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference m arked thereon, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure l represents a front view of the hinge with its latch or fasteningk attached to the frame of the window and to the top of the hinge. Fig. 2 is a top view of the same. Fig. 3 is a front view of the head of the latch, showing its fork shape.
The nature of our invention consist-s in the shape and construction of the latch or fastening operating on a pivot in the frame of the window.
A represents the ordinary and commonlycalled parliamentary77 hinge, screwed onto the window-frame B and shutter C.
D is the latch or fastening, with a hole in the one end that is passed into a slot or mortise in the window-frame, and the upper screw, E, of the hinge is screwed through the hinge and aperture of the latch into the window! frame B, so that the end of the latch operates on the screw loosely as apivot, and allows the latch to be worked up and down easily.
On the side of the falling` latch or fastening D is a projection, Gr, that rests on the top edge of the hinge A, and assists in supporting the latch D.
The front end of the latch is a heavy square head, H, with a slot, J, on the lower side, so as to form a forked head, and, as the latch falls by the weight ofthe forked head, it grasps the top edge of the hinge on the other side of the joint K, and stiffens, fastens, and strengthens the hinge by bracing the hinge to the window-frame, and secures the shutter much more firmly than when the fastenings are attached only to the hinge, as usual.
The curved lever M is for the purpose of raising up the latch D and opening' or closing the shutter from the inside, the point or front end of the lever M bearing against the incline projection P, While the outer end, S, ot' the lever is raised or lowered.
Vhat vwe claim as our invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The arrangement and combination of the latch D with its forked head H, when operated as herein described, and for the purpose set forth.
WILLIAM MGKEE.
