TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:

Be it known that I, ORLEAN DOUD, of Dansville, in the county o f Livingston, and in the'State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gates; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the annexed drawings, and to the letters i of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification. v In the accompanying drawings, A represents the gate, which may be of any suitable form, and placed between the outer and inner gate-posts B B. The upper rail of this gate extends over` the top ofthe inner post B', and' l is provided with an extending-pin, b, on itsunder side, which ts into an opening in the top of a metal cap, a, placed upon the top of the post B for that purpose. Near the bottom of the post B is a circular metallic plate, C, having a. square or other suitable shaped opening, by which means the same is secured around the post. Secured to the inner standard of the gate, opposite the. plate C, is a segmental-groo'ved bar, D, which fits neatly outside of the plate C, acting as a hingefor the gate. It will be seen that by means of the pin b and cap a, plate C and bar D, the gate can be opened or closed from either side, and can readily be taken from` the post for removal, and as easily again connected. The outer part of the gatet is provided with two latches,v d d', which are operated simultaneously by means'ot' a rod, t'. These latches are made in the form-of a small frame of metal, encircling the front upright of the gate, (sce'Figure 4.-,)land provided with a curved plate, f, having a notch in the centrefo'r catching into small pins n: as, projecting inwards from the post B. 'Ihe upper latch-i is pivoted to a lever, e, which lever has its fulcrum between two small bars, vertically secured to the'two upper panels ot" the gate, and is provided with small springg below it. By-pressing upon this lever tl1e`two latches are released from the pins at, and the gate allowed to turn'on its hinges.

This gate may be so operated as to clear obstructions, such as snow, &c., or can be used for level ground or inclined surfaces. i

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure 'by Letters Patent, is- 1. The combination of the rail A with pin I2 and post B with cap a and metal plate C, with the gate A, having segmentalliar D, all constructed, arranged, and operating in the manner and for the purposes set forth. 2. The latches d d', rod 2', lever e, and spring g, used in connection with the gate A and post B, with its pins z x, for the purposes set forth.
