TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN: i
Be it known that I, PETER. L. MILLER, of Mechanicsburg, county of Cumberland, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Gates; and I do hereby declare the following to be afull, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being lhad to. the accompanying drawing, which is made a part of this specification.
The subject of my invention is a. gate adapted to be opened and closed by a-person on horseback or in a. carriage without dismounting'.
My present improvement consists of a. novel and simple arrangement foropereting the latch.
.The drawing is a perspective view of a. gato embodying my improvement, the'red lines indicating the position of the several parte when the gate is open. w
A may represent the gate; B, the hinge-post; B B, the catch-posts, and C C the posts to the tops of which the levers D D', by which the gate is operated, are pivoted, The standard A at the binge-end of th gate is provided with a horizontal arm or lever, E, which projects rearward from said standard at an angle of about forty-five degrees.' Pivoted to this arm is a. bell-crank, F, which is connected to the levers D D by rods G Gf, and to the latch A throuj" 'be 'rtlum of' another bell-crank, H,'(pivoted to the-top rail of the gum) by rods I J'.
By pulling either of the lev'ers D D', motion will be imparted, through the rod connecting it to the bollcrenk F, to said bell-crank, and by it, through the rod I, to. the bell-crank H and rod J', and the latch be raised out of the catch b; and after the latch has reached the upper extremityof the loop K, by the motion inI that direction being stopped, the'draughtwill bc transferred to the arm E and the gate opened, the latch thon engaging the drop-catch on the post B.
l To close the gate, the lever being moved toward thc position indicated by the black lines, the latch A will,Y through the same sonrc'es as in opening, first bc dropped sulliciently to allow the latch to pass below the catch when, by its reaching the lower extremity of the loop K, the draught will be transferred, as before, and the gate closed.
The posts B B B", C C may be secured in a sill, L, as represented in the drawings, or otherwise, as may be desired.
aving thus described myinvention, what I claim as new therein, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination ofthe bell-cranks F E; rods G G', I, J, and levers D'D with the latch A, all arranged and operating substantially as and for the purpose specified.
To the above specification of my improvement in gates I have signed my hand, this 17th day of January, A. D. 1868.
