PENHOLDEE.
Application filed May To all whom it may eoneem:
Be it. own. that I, ANDREW Moll. GARD- Nnn, e Cltldfill of the United States, residing 'e, in the county of Davidson an at Nushvi State of Tennessee, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Penholders, of which the following a specification.
This invention relates to penholders of that type i: own as ejecting penholders, in which at us l I'Hdill'lllllll can be readily removed or dislodged from the holder.
The object ofthe invention is to provide an improved device of the kind which can he cheaply constructed and quielrlytand easily operated s will more fully appear from the following description and the accompanying drawings.
in the drawings. Figure l is'zi side View of the penholder; l 2 is a longitudinal section thereof; Fig.
3 is a side view of the holder in ejecting or open position.
Referring specifically to the drawings, 6 indicates the handle or stock of the holder and 7 a ferrule on the end thereof. The latter is made of sheet metal as usual and is provided on opposite sides with slots 8 and 9 which extend length wise with respect to the holder. The upper or rear slot 8 is a plain, straight slot. The front or lower slot 9 is angular, haring a lOllglllltlllllll portion, and an upwardly extending or cross portion 10, the letter being located at the front end of the slot. A soeiated Will). the ferrule s a cap 11 eonsisiu'ig of a piece of sheet metal bent to it upon the upper of the ferrule. This cap is provided at its opposite edges with front and rear tongues 12 and 13 which are bent or curved in to engage in the slots end 1% respectively. The slots are longiar than the tongues are wide so that limited movement of the cap is permitted in :1 direction lengthwise of the ferrule. The offset parts 10 of the slots 9 are deep enough to allow the tongues 12 to escape from the slots when the cap is pushed forward or downward toward the penpoint.
In the use of the device the pen is inserted between the cup 11 and the ferrule 7, the esp being in retracted position with the tongues'li end 13 at the rear ends of the slots, and in this position the pen will be specification 01'. Letters Patent.

322 reach the front end of the slot 9 at w ich 4 time the front end of the cap 11 will spring up or release, allowing it to be turned upwardly on the tongues 8 as pivots, thereby opening the some at the front end thereof and allowing the penpoint to drop out. The rear end of the cup is cut away, as indicated at l-l, to permit this swinging or turning movement. By special effort the cap may he sprung enough to detach the same entirely from the ferrule, should it be desired to do so. In practice, a simple movement of the thumb grasping vthe holder will be suiiieient to advance or retract the cap 11 and thus hold or release the penpoint.
The number of parts and cost of the derive will evidently be no more than that of iuary holder, since the two parts required, that is the ferrule and the cap, can be readily stamped out of sheet metal and quicklv assembled by springing the latter onto the former.
I claim:
l. A penholder having a ferrule with slots in opposite sides, and a cap .slidable back and forth on the ferrule and having tongues fitting in said slots, part ofthe slots having enlargements at the end permitting disen gagement of the tongues therein when the ole] engagement in the other 'slots'.
2. A. penholder havin a ferrule with front and rear slots in the Sit es thereof, the front slots being enlarged at the front ends thereof, and a cap slidnhle back end forth on the ferrule and having tongues at its side edges engaging iii said slots, the enlargements permitting disengagement of the front tongues when the cap is slid forward, and the rear tongues having pivotal engagement-in the rear slots. i v i In testimony whereof, l affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
