PENHOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 581,738, dated May 4, 1897.
Application filed Au st 13, 1896.
T0 aZZ whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD ALBERT KIN- LEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Breesport, in the county of Ohemung and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Penholders; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to penholders.
My object is to provide a more simple and cheap penholder which will be provided with a novel form of clamp for the pen, whereby the latter can be firmly held in position, but quickly and easily released at any time.
Having this object in view, my invention consists in the combination, with a stem of the penholder, of a movable clamp for one end, connected thereto, and a band encircling the clamp and the penholder-stem which is adapted to hold the two together whenever desirable.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the preferred form of my improved penholder, a pen being shown held in the clamp; Fig. 2, a like view, but showing the clamp raised after the pen has been removed; and Fig. 3, a perspective view of a modified construction.
The numeral 1 designates a cylindrical tube which serves as the stem of the penholder.
At 2 is shown my improved clamp. This is made are shape in cross-section for the greater portion of its length and extends along the stem for some distance, but is provided with a reduced portion 3, which is riveted to the stem at 4c. The front portion of the clamp is formed into a bead 5. This clamp is constructed of spring metal, so that its tendency is to remain normally raised or sprung away from the stem.
Serial No. 602,65 (No model.)
At 6 is shown a band or ring which encircles the stem and the clamp, and when in the position shown in Fig. 1 it abuts on the bead, which prevents it from coming off and keeps the clamp held against the stem, so that a pen 7 is tightlyheld between said stem and clamp. lVhen the band is pulled back toward the end of the stem and onto the portion 3, the clamp will spring upwardly, as shown in Fig. 2, and the pen will drop out or can be easily removed.
In Fig. 3 I have shown a modified construction. Instead of riveting the rear end of the clamp to the stem and constructing the former of spring metal said clamp is provided.
with two ears 8, which straddle the stem and are pivoted 011 the pin 9. When the band is pushed back, the clamp can be raised.
Slight and immaterial changes might be resorted to in constructing my improved penholder without impairing its efficiency in any manner, and hence Iconsider myself entitled to all such variations as properly come within the spirit and scope of my invention.
Having thus described my invention, What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In a penholder, the combination With a cylindrical stem,of a clamp made of spring metal which has a rear reduced portion secured to the stem, and a body which snugly fits the latter, beingprovided with a bead, and a band encircling the stem and clamp and slidable longitudinally in relation thereto.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
EDWARD ALBERT KINLEY.
