PEN-HOLDER.

Be it known that I, ALGERNON S. H UBBELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Norwich, in thecounty of New London and State cf Oonnecticut, have in vented certain new and useful Improvements in Pen-Holders, which improvements are fully sei; forth and described in the following specification, reference being had to the accompanying sheet cf drawings.

This invention relates t0 that dass of penholders in which the peu and its connected tubular support may be drawn partially 0r wholly within the handle of the holder for the purpose cf conoealing and prot-ect-ing the penp0int when not in use.

Myimmediate object is to so simplify the construction of such pen-holders that they may be cheaply produced and easily operated. T0 this end 1 have improved particularly the form and modeof construction of.the sliding pen-support, as hereinafter described in detail, and specified in the claim.

The annexed drawings illustrate said invention, Figure 1 being a side view cf acon1- plete peu-holder 0f myimproved construction, showing the peu and its tubular support drawn out as in the act cf writing. Fig. 2 is an enlarged longitudinal section of the slotted end 0f such a holder with the peu drawn within the handle. Fig. 3 is a plan 0f the blank fro1n which the sliding pen-support is fo'rmed, showingboth the punched blank and the same after lip d has been bent forward over the body portion. Fig. 4 shows said pen-support bent to shape and ready r0 be attached to the slotted handle-section.

Referring to the drawings, the letter a indicates a handle 0f wood, ivory, celluloid, or other suitable n1aterial, having its pen-engaging end slotted, as at b, lo receive the section that supports the peu c. Said pensupport is made of sheet metal, (01 0f similar material that may be readily punched and bent to shape) and is formed with a b0dy portion substantially rectangular, (see d,) and an end projection or lip, d.

In shaping up my pen-support from said blank the end lip, d, is first bent forward until it lies 011 0r very close to the b0dy portion d, the extreme end of said lip being preferably bent slightly outward, as illustrated in Fig. 2. The office 0f the lip d thus bent is threefold: First, it serves as a spring-clamp to retain the peu within the tubular support, the body 0f the peu being forced 0ver said lip as said peu is inserted in the tube; second, the free end 0f lip d,when drawn forward, abuts a lug, a, at the open end of slot b, and thus serves as a positive stop r0 prevent the tube from being drawn completely ofi from the handle-seetion, and, third, the free end of said lip d rests at all tin1es against the lower Wall of slot b and serves as a friction-brake to prevent the pen from slidingtoo freely int0 the handle-section. VVithout some such provision the downward pressure cf the band du ring the act 0f writing would force the handle downward through the tubular peu-support.

The lug a, above referred so, is preferably integral wit-h the handle a, and is provided by leaving said lug projecting when the slot b is cut.

The barrel 0f the pen-support is formed by swaging 01 rolling in the longitudinal edges 0f the body-section d. The tubular pen-support thus provided is attached to the handle a by simply slicling said tube over the lower limb of the slotted end of said handle. As the free end of the spring-lip d passes lug a said lip snaps downward behind said 1ug and the penholder is ready for the perl.
