GLOVE MITTEN, OR THE LIKE.

GLOVE, MITVTEN, on THE LIKE.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Sept, 7, 1909,
Application filed October 5, 1908. Serial No. 456,831.
' thereof.
A glove or mitten to be worn while the user is performing work which would injure the hands if bare, or while the user is working in coldweather, which uses require comparative freedom of movement of the fingers, must, to be best adapted for use, possess the desired toughness and consequently relative stifiness in those parts which cover the palm and thumb of the hand, and in that portion of the glove or mitten which covers the fingers sufficient flexibility must be afforded to permit freedom of action of the fingers, but at the same time afford the necessary protection. This condition is illustrated in the operation of husking corn. In this operation, the ear of corn is held between the palm and thumb of one hand while the husks are stripped with the fingers of the other hand, this condition making it desirable that the gloves or mittens used as a protection to the hands of the operator, be relatively tougher and more durable in the palm and thumb portions and as flexible as possiblein the part which covers the'fingers.
My primary object, generally stated, is to provide a glove or mitten which shall pos-.
sess the required degree of toughness in the palm and thumb portion for protecting the hands and shall be sufiiciently flexible in its finger-portion to permit relative freedom of movement of the fingers.
Another object is to provide a glove of the character referred to which shall be economical to manufacture and will permit the finger-portion to be readily renewed or replaced as desired; andanother object is to provide a glove inwhich the finger-portion shall constitute the outer extremity of a lin ing for the portion of the palm and thumb.
Referring to theaccompan-ying drawing Figure 1 is a perspective view of the palmside of a mitten constructed in accordance glove covering the with my invention; Fig. 2 is a similar view of the lining and finger-portion of a mitten; and Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the rear side of the mitten illustrated in Fig. 1.
The mitten illustrated is designed, more particularly, for use in husking corn and comprises an outer portion 4 and an inner portion 5. The portion l is designed to cover the back, palm and thumb of the and is formed of material capable of relatively great resistance to wear, such as relatively heavy leather, relatively heavy material being used in this portion of the glove as great freedom of movement is not required of those portions of the hand covered by the glove-portion 4:. The inner portion 5 is preferably in the form of a pocket having openings formed in it in its opposite hand, covering for the fingers being omitted,
sides near one edge as illustrated, these openings being provided for insertion through them of the thumb of the hand, it being understood'that the purpose of providing two thumb-openings is that of permitting the portion 5 to be reversed when either side of its finger-portion becomes worn out. While the thumb-openings may be formed in any suitable manner, I prefer to form them by cutting in each side of the portion 5 two intersecting slits 7 and 8, as illustrated, the free edges thereby formed permitting the thumb to pass through them.
The portion 5- is made of any suitable flexible, preferably soft, material, capable of permitting comparatively free movement of the fingers when the mitten is applied to the hand as hereinafter explained, the material 1 and then drawing the mitten so assembled on to the hand, or by first drawing the portion 5 over the hand to cause the thumb to extend through one of the openings 6 and the fingers to extend into the closed end-portion of the part 4 and then drawing the portion 4 over the portion 5 to the position illustrated in Fig. 1. In both cases, the portion 5 fitsover the hand including the fingers and forms a lining for the outer portion 4 which latter fits over the palm, back of the hand and thumb.
If desired, the portionf5 may have connection with the back of the portion 4, as by a tape 9, or other fastening device, passing through both portions 4 and 5, the primary purpose of this fastening being that of preventing gaping of the portion i when the finger-portion of the part 5 is flexed in use.
Theform in which I prefer to employ the portion 5, as illustrated, aflords, in addition to the flexible finger-portion, a lining for the portion 4 and the thumb-opening 6, which may be supplemented by a thumb-portion: (not shown) similar to the thumb-piece e, serves to prevent the part 5 from slipping off the hand. 7
hen the mitten is to be used for husking purposes it will be found that the cottonflannel may be satisfactorily employed without any other protection, but if desired the finger-portion of the part 5 may be made of slightly heavier material than: that described, such as soft leather.
The parts of the mitten being separable, as; soon as the portion 5. becomes worn out on bothsides, if the reversal feature is used, it may be quickly replaced by another made of material suitable for the work to be done,
- it being understood, however, that the fingerportion of. the part 5. shall be of relatively flexible material as compared with the portion 4.- The provision of the relatively stiff portion 4 due to the toughness of the material used, and the relatively soft finger-portion of the part 5, permit-s full freedom. of operation of the fingers as desired, and affords the desired resistance to Wear or strain on those portions of the hand which need not have free movement.
lining said outer section, said sections being separable, for the purpose set forth.
2. In a. glove, mitten, or the like, the combination of an outer portion of relatively tough material adapted to extend over the palm and thumb but not over the finger-portions of the hand, and an inner portion of relatively flexible material having thumboponings in opposite sides thereof and adapted to extend over the finger-portion of the hand and form a lining for said outer porr tion.
3. A glove, mitten, or the like, comprising an outer portion formed of relatively thick leather and adapted to extend over the palm and thumb portions of the hand but not over the fingers thereof, an inner portion formed of cloth provided with a thumb-opening and adapted to extend over the fingers of the hand and form a lining for said outer portion, and fastening means for releasably holding said portions together.
